Any suggestions on a replacement?

i'm running the standard one the bike came with, snapped 3 teeth off the larger gear a long time ago, snapped one on the middle gear some months ago, and finally today snapped one on the smaller gear... bike is now a gamble as to whether im going to fall off and hurt myself or not lol.

currently run 41T large front gear ( go give an idea on the size )

XT seems to be good. £120 with a BB fitted. Lovely job.

Depends what kind of bottom bracket you have on. Is it an expensive bike? If not, I'd just go to your LBS and get a similar replacement.

No need to get new cranks if all you need is chainrings and XT,LX cranks chainrings seem to be notoriously soft anyway. Get on ebay, buy a decent crankset, save the cranks for later or ebay on, keep the chainrings. I tend to buy Truvativ cranksets as the whole lot works out cheaper than one outer ring from a bike shop.

That's what I have. Great kit, and a bargain if you look on the Merlin site. Maybe even cheaper deals if you wait until September when the 2009 kit hits the shops.

Unlikely that prices will be affected by the 2009 Saint kit as that isn't available as triple ring.

Yep 08 XT is a great bet. For an even better bargain, source some 07 in 'as new' condition on ebay or see if a shop has any lying about. Style changed significanly from 07 to 08, so should be able to pick some up cheap. I've run 07s for 2 years on my XC bike and other than changing the chainrings no problems.
