Just wanted to post a thread as my MOT seems to have snagged a leaking rack again frown.

Does anyone have the details of whether the rack needs to come out to replace the end oil seals, and where one gets them from?

Not sure if it need to come out, but a quick search thru the forum this place came up alot......... Greenwich Power Steering services, sure it was quoted about £150 to get it refurbbed.
People also said it was a bit of a bu**er of a job when assembeling it all back together trying not to nick the seals.

Hope that helps smile

£135 + the dreaded VAT & postage from Greenwich when I had my Griff one refurbed in winter. If the Cerb one is ally and you don't want it to come back painted black be sure to mention it when you send it off.

When talking to Greenwich did anyone find out whether all Cerb racks are identical or are they remachined versions from other cars?

Really want to do the rack myself, and just get the seals. I find it easier to ask here to gain all the info possible before starting, as I hate asking questions of professionals especially as the more questions they answer the less like they are to get the business.

Obviously the weekend at the mo frown

For the sake of £150 i would get the rack re-furbed at Greenwich. My Cerb had to have it done for MOT last year,i was advised to have it done cus if you only do the seals within 6months it will be leaking again!

Surprising.

Mine was fine when I collected it. Apart from the large quantity of black paint over it.

Worst part is getting the damn thing out. laugh

Most threads I have found on this subject finish with an esso like statement. For the sake of £150 get someone else to do it.

Unfortunately I will only do this if I have no other realistic option. I'm afraid I'm just that sort of person. I want to have done it all. I want to understand it all, and I can't do that by payin the £150.

So calling all obsessives, anyone refurbed their own rack, or am I launching into the oggin again? smile

Dont get me wrong,if there is a job i can do on the Cerb myself then i will do it(fitted clutch, slave, master cylinder last year-as an example),but sometimes its not worth the time or grief-you have to bite the bullet and leave it to the experts!

Not daft at all Julian, fully understand where you're coming from. I'd rather buy a 'specialist' tool for a job and do it myself rather than have a 'professional' do it for me.

I do draw the lines at some jobs and luckily we have APM and TCS for those occasions. biggrin

Not that much. TVR parts do the top seal. Raceproved don't seem to do anything yet but told me to ring them back if I couldn't find anyone else. Greenwich haven't replied to about three left messages.

Most people say special machines required to push out the centre seal and that its impossible for a home guy to do. frown

Julian, when you said the rack internals were Rolls Royce, apparently its just the pinion/coloumn end that is RR. The track rods are from a mk5 escort, and not a Scorpio, apparently.
What the rack internals are from is anyones guess.

Whilst taking my rack apart, I must have snagged the spring that sits behind one of the rubber seals in the pinion:

Oh the joys of motoring hehe

Could probably Google the part number from the markings...
