Boiling Battery!
Discussion
Hi
Got a bit of a problem with the battery in my S2, it has been gassing quite badly and leaking acid from the vent. I originally thought the alternator could be over charging the battery but I've had it rebuilt and checked out. I also replaced the battery thinking there may be a problem with the old one but I'm still having the same problem.
I was wondering whether it could be the heat under the bonnet causing the battery acid to boil, as the location of the battery is very close to the exhaust manifold.
Has anyone else had a similar problem and if you did what was the diagnosis? I know S3s on had the battery mounted in the boot, perhaps it was moved for that reason?
Any assistance / thoughts would be appreciated.

Another vote for the voltage regulator - either that or the battery plates are buckled or bent or shorting internally. Sounds like it's being overcharged though.
It was only the S4 that had the battery in the boot (and that, IIRC, was to "standardise" the cabling with the V8S, where there was no room for the battery under the bonnet, not because it was boiling).

Hi,
The voltage reg went in my old Polo and made a similar corrosive steam cloud. You can buy regs for some alternators as individual parts, rather than replacing the whole lot.

Oh, and the battery needed replacing too as it seemed to have a voltage of 19V after the episode.

First check the battery voltage when driving: When the voltage regulator on the alternator plays up, it may be charging oke when idling, but it may overcharge at higher RPM.
If the voltage stays below 15V, and the battery continues to boil, this would indicate a short in one of the cells of the battery. That would mean you'll need a new battery.
