Morning all (I'm working nights, so its mornin for me!)

Got my swedish battle tank a couple of months ago (a 1990/'G' Reg 240 GL, with a B200E), and for the first 2 months it were fine.

Now i seem to have a problem:

When cruising at 70MPH, after about 45-50 minutes, i get a persistant missfire, from around 1500 RPM, up to about 3500. Also it wont rev above 4500rpm, it just seems to die at 4500, and drop down to 4000.

If i pull over when its misbehaving it won't idle properly at all, but switch off and leave it for 10 minutes, and its good to go again (so obviously sommat is over heating)

It was recommended to me that i check for leaks in the pipework (None Found), and replace the plugs/leads/coil/Dizzy rotor/Dizzy cap and Ignition Amp (Done all this apart from the Ign. Amp. Which is proving to be a pig to find, none of my local scrappies have one, and my motorfactors wants stupid amounts for one!)

Is the Ignition amp likely to fix this and i just have to bite the bullet?
Has anyone ever had any dealings with a sick K-Jet system?
Is it in fact NOT a K-jet system at all, and i've been barking up the wrong tree?
Would it be worth getting it Mega squirted? (That was another recommendation to me!)
If MS is the way forward, are there people in oxfordshire i can drop the car off at, and get them to do it for me (If i use a soldering iron, i WILL burn my fingers off!)

Thanks in advance

Anham

Sounds like a blocked fuel filter. Drive fast for a bit and all the crap in the filter stirs up and blocks the element. Leave it sat for a few minutes and the crap settles back to the bottom and off you again for a while. Identical symptoms to an old VW Polo I borrowed briefly from a mate which had sat for ages and unknown to me, or him, had a rusty fuel tank. I spent ages going through every bit of the ignition and carb systems before finally discovering the blocked filter full of rust particles which I hadn't looked at because I'd been told it had just had a new one, which indeed it had at the last service, except the new one blocked up within about 200 miles.

Stuck a new 50p filter on it and flushed the old one out, swapped them over several more times until all the crap was out of the fuel tank and she was good as gold.

Moral of the story. Always check the simple things first and save the panicking for later.

Could also be fuel pump, had exactly the same issue on an audi coupe, same fuel injection system, fuel pump would be fine then would start to seize at high revs and not supply fuel. Switch off and back on again and it would be fine. Replaced it and it was spot on. It isn't likely to be anything sinister so don't panic!

LIFT pump - in tank, gets worn out and places more strain on the main pump.

Fuel Filter - rusty filler neck, used to effect mk1 golfs really badly. K-Jet is very sensitive and the metering units bolts only have very small entry/exit ports for fuel so only a small amount of debris could cause a temporary blockage.

Warm up regulator - engine bay - has biometric strip in it that adjusts fueling depending on temperature.

Fuel pump relay - have heard of them getting hot and playing up!

have a read of this and see if things become clearer before you go paying garages to do simple tasks!
