Motor Show: Ford Fiesta

New Fiesta at British Motor Show

Ford took the wraps off its new Fiesta in both three and five-door at the British Motor Show. The car will be available in October and at present the warmest version announced is the Zetec S.

The Fiesta will be approximately 40kg lighter than the car it replaces, which means that it will have better performance and fuel economy. There is also an Electric Power Assist Steering system that has been tuned to offer low-speed steering ease with more direct driver feedback at higher speeds.

The car is also stiffer than the previous model and over 55% of the body structure made of high-strength steels. There will be an Intelligent Protection System with standard knee airbag – first in a Ford small car – and head-and-thorax side airbags, with optional safety curtain airbags.

Another computer designed clone !

Come on Ford you were always a market leader with quirky unusual design's, time for a change in thinking here and get away from Vans with windows ?

40kg lighter than the outgoing car... excellent work, Ford.

It may not be a massive saving but it's going in the right direction.

I didn't even notice how rank it is, all new cars in this sector seem to look pretty much the same.

But agree with the above, -40kg might not be much but thank goodness a car which is lighter than its predecessor.

Shame they probably won't ever make another Fiesta which looks as cool as this though:

That puts it in perspective, I think its one of those shapes that takes some colours better than others.

The 40kg thing is like a big suitcase so hardly a huge saving, and they don't say if that saving is across the range or just 1 engine/trim level.

Good on them for getting it lighter, shows a manufacturer is making a effort to do that, its all too easy to load new cars up with weight due to safety requirements, etc.

Looks like st though.

Jup, hard choice. Will be down to testdriving to decide (prices will be bang on the same).

Same with the Mondeo and the Mazda 6, but the Mondeo here is common sight and the 6 isn't. The 2 however is very well sold here on the continent, but the fiesta will probably outsell it.

Saw the new Fiesta on Wednesday and have to say I think it looks really good.

Those photographs don't really do it justice at all. A big improvement over the current model.

And for any new model to be lighter than the previous model given the amount of safety stuff that gets added onto cars nowadays is a major achievement.

The 6 is far and away better looking than the Mondeo. Can be had for daft money too.

I'm not going to pass judgement on the looks (until later in this post)but all I will say, Ford, is that if you don't like the unimaginative corporate face, applying it to every car in your repertoire rules them all out as a next purchase. Still, saves a bit of time.

Also saves me time wondering what a crashed Mondeo would look like... rolleyes

I wonder if the design of the front is related to pedestrian safety. I think there are some ped. safety regulations now.
