Leeds - Pickering

Ehup all.
Maybe a bit late posting this but.... Does anyone know a different route from Leeds to pickering without using either A1 or A64?

I'm going for a ride out to Whitby in the morning and don't fancy the monotony of either.

You make things too easy.

Up to Harrogate on the A61 then straight through Ripon and on to Thirsk where you pick up the 170 up sutton bank, through Helmsley, Kirkbymoorside and on to Pickering.

A more adventurous route is available on the B roads nut that one's not too shabby!

Cheers. I'd have ended up at Sutton bank but by using the A1. I'm sure that'll be way more interesting.

On your return you could take a slightly longer way back. At the roundabout in Pickering head south to Malton. From Malton follow the signs to Beverley. This is one of the countries top biking roads, and great in a Griff too! When you get to Wetwang you arrive at a T junction. Right will take you back to the A64 via a nice bit of road. Left will take you through Wetwang village. The best fish 'n' chips around are on your left at Thompson's. Just past the chip oil is the right turn to Beverley, which is a nice stretch too, but after Beverley it's a little dull back to Leeds unless you detour across to Market Weighton by-pass to Holme on Spalding Moor then Bubwith, crossing the A19 to Ricall, Cawood and Sherburn in Elmet, where you could stop off at Squires Coffee Bar and enjoy the constant flow of bikes if the weather's nice.

Both are good suggestions, I know the roads well and agree that these are some of the best routes. Not sure the fish and chips are the best though

Thanks for the suggestion RP but it'll have to wait until next time now.
We went the A61 way and it is a much better way than the A64/1.
We had Fish and Chips from Magpies in Whitby which is renown for some of the Best in Britain... it's bks, the Fish was ropey and the Chips were under cooked. So much so that my lad started with a Dehli Belly as we were leaving Whitby.
Unfortunately it meant it was a quick ride straight down the A64 then A1 Home.
It was the first time I'd done the Fylingdales road on the bike and I felt like Rossi doing the corkscrew at Laguna Seca when we dropped down from the Hole of Horcum

That was my first ever solo ride out... damned good fun!

The trick to doing Whitby to Pickering (or vice versa - it's hard to choose which is my favourite direction on this road) is finding a nice clear day when the road has hardly any traffic. In time it becomes just awesome when you've got it in your head and you know when you can use all of the road (both sides) despite what those unnecessary solid white lines tell you. 2 or 4 wheels, both good!

This is the best scenic route, A1 to dishforth,A19 to Thirsk, Then take the A170 to Sutton Bank,continue on A170 thro Helmsley,just before Kirbymoorside turn left towards Fadmor then Gillamor head to Hutton le hole,turn up by the public car park towards Lastingham, not far along this road turn left to Chimney bank 1 in 3 gradient.At bottom of hill is Rosedale abbey. stop for coffee at the post office tea room. On to Egton, then Goathland, then Whitby.Enjoy fish and chips.

I find the middle of the night is good.

Also Hutton Le Hole to Castleton and Danby via Blakey Ridge (and a meal at the Lion of course).
