Air-con compressors – why so expensive?
Discussion
I finally got my 968 back from Porsche Munich today but with a whacking great 1,900 EUR repair bill for a new air-con compressor and alternator belt . Basically it breaks down as 1,300 EUR for the compressor and the other 600 EUR for a few small ancillary parts and the labour.
At this price it has to be the most expensive item to fail after the head, block, gearbox or diff. I don’t think this is exclusive to Porsches since my mate paid upwards of 1,000 EUR when the same thing happened to his Mundeno.
What I’d like to know is why is the air-con compressor such an expensive item? I’ve not taken one apart to have a look at one but I’ve never considered a compressor to be a particularly complicated or high-precision piece of machinery so why the expense? (preparing to be shot down in flames due to lack of knowledge of compressors).
