Hi folks

Getting somewhat bamboozled buy the options available to me in sat nav world. What I'm after is something that
1. Comes loaded with European maps (Or has the ability to get them at a later date)
2. Ability to plan my own routes and then use the unit to direct me via these.

If anyone has any suggestions as to the best units which cover this functionality then that would be great. From my initial research it looks like the cheaper units don't allow the ability to plan your own routes

Thanks
Chris

For me it is quite a simple choice. Garmin, Garmin or Garmin.

It is what the military use, the aviation industry use and also the marine industry use. They have been in the navigation business for donkeys years and are well established and know what works and what doesn't.

the military and avionics wings of garmin share about as much similarity with the automotive wing as porsche cars and porsche kitchen equipment do to each other.

Yes. Garmin. I've got 4 and I've owned 8 smile
Did I mention I like Garmin?wink

Garmin Zumo 550 comes loaded with European maps. It also comes with a CD with those same European maos to install on your PC. On your PC you can plan a route, including all stops you wish to make. You can plan the route to go the way you want it to go, not just the shortest/fastest/easiest ETC.
You can also plan those types of route on the Zumo itself, if you're away from your PC.

To present a counter opinion - last year I had a Garmin 660 and thought it was good. Then I got a Tomtom 920 and found it much better. It chooses better routes, and gives clearer directions. Buying now, i would get a Tomtom 730.
