Had an intermittant problem were starter wouldn't always turn of the engine on my 4.5bv precat Griff. Happens cold or hot.

When it won't turn over can hear solenoid clicking and trying to pre-engage but no engine turnover.

Could cope with it previously as rarely happens, but now its more frequent.

Suspect new starter required, any views ?

Yep, the selonoids engaging hence the click but the starter's not turning. I'd affirm, you need another starter. Could be a dodgy internal connection, worn gear etc.

I had this problem when my battery was on the way out. Then a few months later it returned and it was a faulty starter motor.

Agreed - check the battery voltage.

It should read 12.3 to 12.8 volts with the engine not running..

Any less than that and it does not look good..

If you haven't got the mod-wise hot start kit fitted then fit one whilst you are at it.

most likely as stated above, but I did get this happen once when my inline 85/100amp main fuse running from the battery to the fuse board came unscrewed and started falling apart.

Thanks for the replies !

Voltage OK and fuse looks good, as battery fairly new.

Anyone know how I can get hold of the hot start kit ?

Ordered a exchange Bosch Starter motor £95

Cheers

my 1994 griff 500 does this all the time. It used to worry me that it wouldn't start, but a few clicks and it always goes.

Mine has a relay mod to get round the well-known under-rated wire issue on the 500 but i can't tell if this helps or not as it clicks one or twice most times.

Could you let me know if the new starter helps, might treat myself to one and a heat shield.

Will let you know if it works as putting it on this weekend.

Mine was the same just a a few clicks then always fires. But now it can take 10 mins or so of clicking before she fires sometimes. Not much fun if you stall your car at the lights................

Same problem on my 500. I'm on the third starter motor and had two minutes of clicking yesterday. Always seems worse from cold, which would imply the low-voltage issue. Thanks for the tip!

New starter works great, spins the engine over more quickly and to date not one click !

Sooo many people fitted starters, me included, when a relay would sort it. Fit a relay as it should be there, dtails of how to fit are on BBs site, see above.
