Not a very techy question I suspect, but one which has been bugging me all night so it has consumed my evening frown

I have a Panasonic TX32LMD70 and have just bought a Panasonic SC-PT460 home cinema system (budget but I think it's pretty good). I have bought a good HDMi cable an all works well when watching a DVD. However, I have two main questions;

1. My set is a 720dpi set and I have the option of manually setting the Upscale DVD to 1080dpi. Should I leave it to default 720dpi (and then it up scales anyway?) or choose 1080dpi. Also, the DVD’s used to fill the screen manually but now they have that band top and bottom. Only way I can get rid of it is to choose ‘Zoom 1’ (instead of 16:9) which stretches the picture. Shouldn’t it fill the screen anyway?

2. I bought a good quality Phono cable so I can use the Home Cinema to watch films (and sport) through the system. I know it won't play 5.1 but I was told it would play in stereo. I connected it as instructed but no matter what I do and how I change the settings the sound only plays through the front right speaker instead of front two sub and centre. I can hear interference through the others but no sound. I checked balance etc, with no difference.

Anyone have an idea why?

OK, firstly its not dots per inch, the 720/1080 refers to the number of horizontal lines that make up the picture.

720p/1080i is identical as far as the viewer is concerned, so if its upscaling to either of these resolutions then there will be nothing to gain by moving between them.

The aspect will need setting in the player to ensure you've got as much coverage on screen as possible. It will also depend on the disc being played and how it the widescreen is achieved.

As for your sound issue, is the cable correctly seated at both ends? Depending on how your cinema-in-a-box operates you may not get anything through the centre channel but should get something in both right and left and probably in the sub depending on where the crossover is set.

You need to read your manuals.

I can't remember what my exact setup is but I think I have a cable with three connectors going from the Sky box, Audio L, Audio R, Video. Video goes into the panel on the side of the TV - AV IN. Audio L & R into the back of the Cinema Amp. This cable is scart on one end, the other end is the three cables I've listed. I had to split the casing to free the cables and enable it to reach both the TV and Amp. I've had this outputting to the Cinema Amp in surround sound from both a Freeview box and now a Sky box.

I have a DVD upscaler connected via HDMI to the TV, I think I have an optical cable and/or a phono cable or something going from that to the Amp. I have another DVD recorder hooked up and an Xbox 360. The 360 uses component cables, Video into back of TV, Audio into Amp. I get surround sound from all sources. The TV volume has never been on, ever. Its a confusing mess of wires but if you think it through logically it will make sense....eventually.

Most widescreen films tend to have black bands even on widescreen TV's I'm afraid. You can use the zoom function, but then you are losing the sides of the picture.
