Anyone used this outfit before ? They are offering a replacement strut for my Griff Pre cat for £19.75 +vat and postage.

Sounds to good to be true...............

They are called SGS Engineering (UK) Limited Derby and special in strut supply and refurb.

That sounds a fair price.

I got a pair of stainless ones from RS components that cost £70 FFG went halves :-)

They also do black ones that cost £40 per pair so for one I'd say that was fair.

Linky to pics and more info on the alternative parts list linky

The strut from a P38 Range Rover upper boot section goes straight on. Any Land Rover independent should be able to sort you out with one, mine was a genuine part and cost £4 +VAT!! thumbup

Out of interest has anyone fitted a gas strut to the bonnet lid? My son-in-law has fitted something to his Nissan 350Z that looks like it might be suitable. Basically it would need a long travel and be able to go negative on the last bit when shutting it because of the way the lid works. Thoughts anyone scratchchin ??? Rich...

The gas strut we really need is one to sort the glove box.

Any ideas?

Now that sir may be a good idea...of to search rs componenets and see how short they do them?

Shortest one i can find goes from 60mm to 160mm extended £60 a pair mind part no 346-9503 there stainless or they have black for £40 per pair thats £20 each..will have a measure up at weekend and see if it can be fixed somehow...if it looks viable may buy a pair if someone wants to go halfs

If fixing can be sorted I'll go halves. Anybody want to go halves on a SS pair for the boot?

From memory they can't be repaired. Also the £60 for 2 sounds too cheap. We got ours from RS and they were more than that 3 years ago and steel has rocketed since then.
BB - do you know the correct part number?

The ones we had Paul for the boot are on the Griffith Pages Alternative parts clicky]http://www.thegriffithpages.com/alternative...

Stainless steel

Black ones

Rs Components do two types that I know fit the 96 boot. Although you have to buy in pairs. They are made by Cameloc who made the original.

Stainless steel Variable pressure Gas spring - Rs stock no.339-9038 £70 per pair.

Black vairable pressure gas spring - Rs stock no. 686-979 £40 per pair .

Although like Andy J says P38 Range Rover upper boot section straight fit for around £5..

I bought a Tailgate Strut part no, MXC7833P from Rimmer Bros today and fitted it tonight, perfect fit and dead simple to do, £6.61.
However, on my S3 when I press the boot release the strut pushes the boot open but this does not happen on the Griff, is it supposed to? If so, then the L-R strut is not powerful enough to lift the weight of the Griff's boot lid by itself but it will keep it open.
Does your boot lid open on release?

Nope, not sure the catch would hold it wink Although if it did, it would solve the self raising "air brake" problem i had on one of my Fighting Torque runs this year hehe

Hi Martin,

How's my car! hope all going well, I just love the Griff, thankfully considering how much I've spent on it so far!

Re the boot lid, the S version is somewhat lighter so the strut will lift it, it's annoying when you release the boot only to find it has locked again!!
