R33 GTR SKYLINE
Discussion
loads to look out for really, head over to the GTROC
Few things;
1. Who's looked after it
2. Service history - how often has it had things like oil changes, what oils have been used etc. They're very sensitive with low oil levels and the like, which can often prove fatal. Lots of RB's have needed rebuilds.
3. Rust - not a big problem but one to be aware of
4. what parts have been used - budget isn't always a bad I guess but if it's been done on the cheap you have to ask yourself how long it'll hold up.
5. What's it been used for; mine was an everyday driver, many have been tracked, not always a bad thing again but obviously it's going to accelerate wear on certain parts.
6. Gearboxes - syncros wear out, particularly either side of 3rd gear. Easily spotted by the gears crunching as you change, especially higher up the revs.
7. interior wear - bolsters on the seats can wear through easily
There's loads more to look out for but generally they're very solid cars when looked after. Whilst the market has certainly dropped for R33's good ones still fetch good money, don't be tempted by the bottom of the price scale as there's so many awful ones that are moneypits waiting to happen lurking at the bottom of the market. I'm sure there's one or two bargains to be had, but there's a lot of s
t ones that get snapped up and punted out for sale by less than favourable importers looking to make a quick buck.
500bhp is pi$$ easy on GTR's, so mechanically it shouldn't be too stretched if the work has been done properly and not just by a boost monkey.
Get over to the GTROC and do your research, set a budget, don't be too tight and don't buy the first one you see. I speak from experience when I say they truly are amazing fun to own.

Rust is becoming an issue on these , i know of a few cars which have the front suspension turrets rusting out so give those areas and wheelarches a good check over if the car has been in the country for more than a year of so check its been undersealed , if it hasnt walk away if its a fresh import budget to have it done its a must!!
Remember there are loads and loads about so be prepared to walk away

As above really, would be better to buy one already in the uk with a proven service history; IMO this would be better than having to sort out all the niggles afresh. I made the decision to go with a fresh import and although the car was described accurately in the advert after having driven it for a few months there was alot that needed doing to get it into really good condition.
This is my third year of ownership and its only just getting to how I think it should be, check out my profile for costs etc. Must say I cannot tell one end of a spanner from the other so have to pay some one else to do all the work for me!
There are loads out there so unless it is fully documented history and well looked after find another one!

if you look on www.gtr.co.uk and go to the forums...My car is going to be for sale soon and I put some pics in the members gallery..It is listed as Black R33 GTR if you do a search.
It has been in the UK for over 8 years and owned by me for 6...All history is by the biggest tuners in the UK.

If you decide to consider 32 GTR's as well, mine is currently up for grabs.
You can see the add in Pistonheads classifieds (Search for "IMMACULATE R32GTR Nissan Skyline"" and also on the GTR forum and on the Skyline Owners forum.
Loads of history, ALL work in the UK done by Abbey Motorsport (from standard car to where it is now). Maintained with no expense spared. Only reason for sale is that I don't really use it anymore and I'm moving on to something "normsl".
Cheers,
Daz
