I think GT3 is the best driving game around,
and it's on the PS2 with its great graphics and great gameplay.
Best driving game ever so far..............

It has to be Colin McRae 2. I've played V-Rally (Dreamcast), GT3 (PS2) and WRC (PS2) and none of them come close to the realistic handling that CM2 provides. Realistic lift off oversteer, understeer that can corrected with the throttle and a tail that can be directed with the throttle! Even the cars feel V different when it comes to balance etc. This really is a great game and I can't wait for CM3 on PS2 or XBox. I'll buy which ever it comes out on first.

Regards,

Rob

Thanks for your impressions rjben:
I was wondering if WRC was better than CM2. If you say it's not then I'll forget about it.

Had a shot of WRC and didn't like it. Think GT3 is best.

Got CM2 and GT3. Like them both. Car physics seems much better in CM2 than GT3, but GT3 still v. good fun (and better looking). Will get WRC, since it's by DID, and they are usually pretty good when it comes to physics (background in flight sims).

IMO WRC is not even as good as V-Rally and V-Rally is rubbish!

I've got WRC on PS2 and I think it's great. Not a huge advance over CM2, rather like GT3 Compared to GT2.

But GT3 is the daddy for me!!

Definately Grand Prix Legends, here's a clue its still for sale after 5 years in a market where games are old after a year, and still has fantastic support over the internet so good in fact that GPL2 has been ditched because they thought there wouldn't be a market for it.

The main difference however is that GPL isn't a driving game its a driving simulation, everything is modellled, you can download tracks, more acurate sounds and cars and various on-line racing stuff. I've seen GT3 and its very impressive but its still a game. Colin Mcrae 2 again good game but you need a cheat code to get to play all the tracks and cars.

Its down to what you want. If you want a real driving simulation then GPL is IT, if you want a quick drive round a track, or dirt road then GT3 or Colin Mcrae 2/Rally championship (joint equal) IMHO

Or play and win then you get all the cars and tracks.
Surely it's the challenge of winning which is the whole point of all these games?

I don't get people who use cheat codes, where's the fun in that?

There is no story in Colin Mcrae 2. We don't progress, you don't get better as a driver. I cannot see any point in locking out sections of a game I have bought when there is no progression. In an adventure game eg Lara Croft or Diablo 2 yes there is a story and your character develops.

I bought Colin Mcrae 2 so I could drive a rally car around world circuits as did the majority of people. I didn't buy the game so that I had to drive for hours on end with a different car and circuit just so I could drive around the UK rally in a Peugot.

I agree that I don't normally use cheat codes but in a racing game I see no point in lockouts whatsoever. They don't add depth they just P*ss you off. GPL and Rally championship saw no need to lock anything off and look how good and successful they are!

The challenge in a racing game is to beat your own time or to win the race of your choice. A good game will have realistic graphics and gameplay. The longevity of the game is determined by how challenging it is, not by not allowing parts of the game. Its almost childish attitude of "you can't have any desert until you've finished your dinner" I'm an adult I've bought the game so if I want to just "desert" then the stupid game should let me. Just my opinion.

well i dont have a PS2 soooo the best racing game for me is Gran Turismo 2 and CMR2 for the ralling around.
and now i am a bit curious about the personal best times you guys have with Gran Turismo 2...

who is capable of lets say...... driving on Midfield Raceway and race a lap under one minute? (and no use of a Escudo or GTone with 975 hp oke?)

I agree with Smeagol, locking out sections (and cars) is downright annoying. I got GT3 so I could powerslide TVR's, not to waz around is some sad little Jap "lighweight" until I earned enough money to buy one. And it really should tell you the game is use for Sweet FA without a memory card.

Colin McCrae has the physics licked, car handling is so accurate you flinch when you crash. This is where it's at if you want realistic handling.

GT3 looks fine (though still dissappointing in "camera behind car" mode) but lacks the ultimate controllability of CM2. Bit of a laugh if you turn all the driver aids off and try to hack round in a Viper though, just a shame that doughnuts don't leave a mark!

Most frustrating? Driver. Took me weeks to get out of that garage! I would have happliy murdered the game designers several times, and thanks to 14 year old nephew for getting me out of there before I went insane.

Need for Speed is not bad from a driving perspective, but graphics are a bit weak.

What we really want is "Virtual Track Day" - a game with all the UK tracks, car physics from CM2, graphic power of GT3, and *lots* of real road cars of the tasty sort, with plenty of car tweak options (like GT3). Load up your car, and practice like mad for the real thing! Whe-ey!
