My 1995 XJR 4.0 I-6 has an occasional timing chain rattle at startup. It only happens for a second or so, and after that doesn't make any noise at all. It also probably only makes the noise every 1 in 10 starts. But I've read that the rattle is something to worry about. Can anyone explain to me how big of an issue it is likely to be taking into consideration what I've described above? I'm minded not to change it unless it is a major issue as the car is only worth around £2k these days, and I drive it less than 4k miles a year.

It sounds as if the tensioners need changing.

A full set and chains including labour and VAT can go from £800 to £1,500 depends where you go.

As you say the car is only worth £2K and you don't do a high mileage I would change the TOP tentioners and leave the bottom ones (they don't go as quickly).
Also leave the original chains, that will save a lot of money, and do away with the main problem.

All you would have to do then it take the cam covers off and slip in the new top tentioners, new gaskets and your done

How much would the parts cost for that, do you know?

I'm guessing this is the tensioner I need:

You mentioned tensioners (plural) - excuse the ignorance as I've never had to do any work like this on a car with timing chains, but I'm assuming it's one chain per cam and therefore 2 tensioners?

And do I need to change the upper dampers too?

IF it only does it at startup, dont worry, they all do that, the oil pressure is lost in the tensioner and it take a sec or two to build up.

Would only bother replacing it if it does it all the time. they sometime do it as you accelerate though 2500rpm. Then you wont upper and lower tensions and all the guides, sometime called blades.

Its not like the V8's where if you hear a noise, the engine needs to be done pronto, or your stuffed, its just an unpleasant noise at start up, really dont worry.

has it had the updated tension, jaguar released a mod to overcome this. the later tensioner has a cast ' lump ' on it sticking out, about the size of a golf ball. the eariler one is flatter. hoper this helps.

The straight 6 has no known tensioner issues, so there are no specific issues to be concerned about.

However, a rattling timing chain on any car is not a good sign so would be worth getting looked at sooner rather than later.

Yep, literally just on start up, doesn't do it at all after a second or two. So nothing to worry about then? That's a plus. I can put the cash towards the paint the Le Mans graphics took off... :-(
