Couple of loose hoses under the bonnet!!

Had the bonnet off yesterday for the first time to re-align the windscreen wipers.
Whilst have a nosey around at all the gubbins (its like a tractor engine!!!) I noticed a couple of loose hoses, first a large-ish diameter one that appears to be a breather between the airbox and oil swirl pot. Second was a small diameter hose going to a little bosch unit mounted near the very front of the engine.
Lord knows how they "popped off", the larger one was secured with a cable tie (as pretty much everything else under there appears to be!!) and I've put it back and tightened it up.
The smaller was just a friction fitting.
Any clue what they are for? I havent had any probs with the car and its been running better than ever lately.

The large one is the oil tank breather, so any oil fumes from the tank get pulled into the airbox, would make no difference to the running of the engine ,it could just get a bit oily under the bonnet.
Don't know what the smaller one would be. maybe somthing to do with the window washers?

Is this what makes the air filter covered in oil then and the potential cause to the fire's that are caused if the car back fires? If so would a hose to say a small K&N breather filter not be a safer solution especially to those who fit the ACT carbon air box and trumpets?Don't know what the smaller one would be. maybe somthing to do with the window washers?

dont worry its only happend to 2 cars I think and both had the Act carbon air box and trumpets so they think that might be related although the standard one could be just as bad. Think both happend at start up.
Have heard similar, but not with the ACT carbon air boxes only the standard one, which does not surprise me with the poor fit and gaps on the clean side of the filter.The problem does appear to be on start up with possibly a bit to much throttle. You do need to be very careful with start up backfires and get them sorted quickly
My SBC had this problem and eventually it caused an internal explosion and caught fire.
It blew off the rockers and obliteratd the rocker gaskets, it blew down the sump, it blew out the front timing cover and seal, damaged the carb and turned the oil to a thick gravy. Cost me alot of money to repair, even though parts were dirt cheap.
