E36 coupe window problem

my window will not go up more than about 1/4 of the way, and it seems that if you wind it as it were and wind it back up no matter how many times you do it, it will not go further than that. when you shut the door, being a coupe, the window shoots up a an inch or so in normal coupe fashion but no where near to the top...

Is this a common problem with them that can easily be fixed, or am I going to have to take the door card off and explore...

It sounds like you need to reset the window. If you do a search on bmwland.co.uk or on here, you should find a thread that will tell you how to do it.
