BBWF Lucky I didn't go!!
Discussion
Had one of those dilemas again this year, BBWF or family stuff. Family stuff won again and I took the kids to Newcastle for the day. Evening comes and a work colleague asks if I fancy a couple of drinks in Newcastle, so to honour BBWF day I went in the Wedge. Had a fab run there, a couple of Orange juices on the Quayside and set off for home after 10pm. Half an hour later I pull up outside my house in the dark and shift the soon to be ex wifes car to put the Wedge to bed. As I go up the drive smoke is billowing from the bonnet vents and when I park up outside the garage and get out there is a long black oil trail up the drive. When I look back further the trail extends up the cul de sac and back the way I came with a huge pool of oil where I parked the wedge outside my neighbours drive to move the wifes car. At no stage did the oil warning light come on.
After pushing the Wedge back in garage and raiding my daughters supply of sawdust for her Guinea pigs to soak up the oil. I left the car to cool off and went back to look at it today.
Apart from a lot of oil sparayed over the front of the engine I could not see anything obvious ie off pipe, hole in the sump, blown whatever.
I jacked up the front of the wedge and removed the front wheels to access under the car better wiped all the excess oil from everywhere to try and see the source of the leak and not a sausage. After checking the oil level - just on the tip of the dipstick - I topped up with a litre and got a neighbour to crank over the engine and once pressurised it pi55ed oil from one of the oil cooler pipes. The spilt was on the underside of the top oil cooler hose which was resting on top of the lower hose and not visible or really noticeable. Fortunately the split was four inches or so from where the pipe connects to the rest of the oil system so I cut out the bad bit, rerouted the pipe and reconnected. Problem solved. I now need to renew all the pipework for peace of mind.
I was lucky that the pipe let go within a quarter of a mile from home and not on the way to BBWF !!! Glad I didn't go now!!! Hopefully catch up with you guys next year and check your oil hoses!!

I know what you mean Nige, mine dumped the oil today on the run from Ettington to The Fleece Inn!
Fortunately for the last few miles I was doing a slow run for Neil in his 350 which had an offside front wheel bearing problem. Luckily we pulled into a pub car park and stopped to check directions and then saw the trail of oil. No oil on dipstick!
Still had oil pressure though.
Turned out to be a split in the rubber pipe from the oil filter close to the jubilee clip.
AA quickly sorted the problem. I only had to top it up with just over 2 litres, so no harm done – I was very lucky. Doesn’t bear thinking what might have happened if I was on a spirited drive. I will be having bad dreams tonight!!
Mine is also 1991 year, so my intention is to check or renew all the hoses soon.
Cheers

Glad to hear all 3 cases of OilossMaximus were resolved without damage or incident.
Same thing happend to my 400 a few years back en route to Le Mans - looked in the mirror to see a long plume of blueblack smoke snaking into the distance as most of the contents pumped out of a 2" slit in the hose from the pump to the filter at 40psi and onto a somewhat hot lower manifold
I guess its a lesson the rest should learn CHECK THOSE HOSES REGULARLY

Reading this has me all paranoid about mine now! Imagine the mess of this happening when going full chat!! Doesn't bare thinking about.
I'm due to get oily this afternoon, just to be on the safe side.
Glad you guys got away with it, narrow escapes indeed.
As stated above, check those hoses!
Thanks

I didn't make it to BBWF this year either...maybe next? but I normally work saturdays.
Glad to hear its all sorted. Did an oil change etc on "wedgeinald" in the last week and all the pipes look ok on him.
I also use an Oil addative claaed "activ8" which is a friction reducer and will also protect the engine should the worst happen. (They even claim an engine treated with activ8 will survive a head gasket leak! i.e. water and oil mixed)
The main reason I use it is for the imporved performance and reliability. I can get usually 10% or more MPG over an untreated engine (can be equated to 7p-12p off a litre of fuel! depending on how you drive), and it reduces engine wear to a minimum.
I recently treated my everyday car (a Jaguar X300 3.2) with it and on a motorway run (approx 40-60 miles) increased my mpg from approx 30 upto 35 (well 34.9!) mpg.
I'm not connected to the company who makes/sells this at all, just have used it in a lot of my cars. I'll not post a direct advert here (don't want to cause any issues for the forum admin guys) but if anyone wants the details I'll be more than happy to pass them on to you if you Private Message me.

This happened to me the thursday before the BBFW, I searched all round Carlisle for 5/8" hose, no one had any, found a company that sells hydrolic hose with wire brading, got 6 feet of the most flexible pipe they had for about 20 quid, this stuff will never fail.
Wonder what next will come up with a mistical problem

I have braided hose on my fuel lines at the rear of the car .. well some people warn against their use - as you cannot see if the silicon / rubber below is perished like you can a regular rubber pipe .. well I had to replace the pump with a more powerful Bosche motorsport pump .. bit of a shock as the hose beneath literally fell apart..
So - be careful with the braided..

main problem with these, is they can change all the tolerances / clearances of the parts, also this stuff can block oil filters.Glad to hear its all sorted. Did an oil change etc on "wedgeinald" in the last week and all the pipes look ok on him.

sounds like slick 50, did they have to remove all there claims from the box.
I think your need to do more of a test than a 40-60 mile motorway run. my audi A3 1.8TS can vary from 30MPG to 45MPG on a motorway depending on how I drive.

All are a waste of money, most are based on very old corrosive and cheap substances .. you are actually better off buying a better oil like Silkoline Pro R or Pro S .. if you want the best oils..
