oil leak...

Took the little monster out for a spin yesterday as the weather was so nice, all went well, but when i went back to the garage, i noticed a drop of oil on the garage floor where the engine bay would be.

Any common leaks or things to check 1st??

firstly find out where the leak is coming from, it could be a number places but check rocker cover gasket these can leak and if they are leaking the oil will run down the back of the engine

another place is the between the gearbox and the engine the seal there goes sometimes

also how much oil are you talking about if it is a small amount just keep an eye on the levels and check regularly

Mine has a small leak from the oil pressure sender - this seems to be quite common, but the leak isn't big enough to even drip onto the floor it just makes the engine dirty so I have to clean it regularly. Will fix over the winter

Could anyone tell me what my oil pressure should be? It's usually around 70/80.. but tuther day it was going right upto nearly 100

I would suspect the oil pressure sender unit re the high pressure as it shouldn't go up by itself. The failure modes for the sender produce all sorts of strange results; mine first went a few years ago just as I pulled out onto the road at the top of Kirkstone pass in the Lakes - it just fell to zero which was a bit worrying but a quick check I still had oil was some reassurance!! The second time the gauge did all sorts of strange things like dropping pressure with higher revs and at times reading high so maybe that is the problem. Not a problem to change - just lean over (more like lie on) the engine from the drivers side and stick your hand down the nearside of the engine (2.9 not sure re the 2.8) to reach the sender.
Late thought - maybe worth checking to ensure you haven't got a loose connector on the sender unit as that could alter the resistance/reading.

PS even later thought - re the oil leak - I put some engine stop leak in last year and it has made a difference. The oil seals dry out with time and the stop leak apparently rectifies that, although a damaged seal won't be fixed, so worth a try and not expensive. It does take a little while to take effect but not too long if you are using the car regularly.
