OK, lovely woman, best intentions and all that. She saw me looking at werners flying watches etc and figured a watch would be a nice gift.

Her uncle gets a lot of watches as samples and gifts and so she picked one from one of the many he has....

the only problem is....

...that its horrid. Its made by Ted Lapitus (???) and is very...gold. VERY gold. plate, i would imagine, but its one of those watches that from 50ft away you would think "bloody hell that blokes wearing a shiny watch". The frame to the face has to be 7cm thick of shiny, shiny gold.

what do i do? Ive said "ooh isnt it nice" and now i will leave it in the box...forever. I mean its the kind of thing a footballer would wear....and LDV Vans Tropy footballer. its really not nice.

Oh dear....

Ted Lapidus is a very down market brand out here in Dubai - Think outlet Pierre Cardin.

Shirts for a fiver and a suit for 80 quid.

Could you pretend that while it is exactly what you want, you have an allergic reaction to the strap.

Well tempting though it is to say eBay I fear you may have to be more subtle than that. The allergy idea is spot on. Alternatively wear it less and less claiming you're worried it will get too scratched. Failing all of that I'm afraid it will have to be the old "Oh my God I've just reversed over my lovely watch!" gambit. Don't envy your choice!

Tell her it's a sure fire classic and needs to stay in your watch box so it doesn't get scratched.

You're going to need to take a punch in the face for this one mate. Get one of your mates to give you a slap and claim you got mugged. You think it was because the watch was so eye catching that it drew the mugger's attention. Maybe in future you'll wear something more understated to be on the safe side.

I'd probably factor in that this happened on a lads weekend away, so foreign cops are dealing with it. You don't want her popping in the local cop shop and raising hell over a non-existent crime.
The lads weekend will leave you feeling sorry enough for yourself that she'll believe the mugging line.

Has anyone thought that losing it/reversing over it/getting mugged by your mates may result in her using her 'connections' to source yet another?

Tell her the truth. Try and align it to shoes - she will be bound to understand that. What if someone gave you some designer shoes but you found out that the designer Matt Alan turned out to be a bit more Walford market than Bond St...?

If she buys you another model of the watch that got you mugged, then there is clearly something more sinister going on and you should probably be shot of her anyway.

I'd just tell her. I bought a Raymond Weil for girly last year which she didn't like (no more surprise gifts from me then hehe) so a quick exchange and all's good. It's the thought that counts smile
