Hello everybody. I'm going to buy supercar and I'm a bit scared about that because there aren't not far from me official ferrari/lambo dealership. I was told that 360 modena diagnostic equipment costs as much as the car today and there aren't other ways to solve ferrari's electronic problems.. Is that true? Can't problems be solved by independents? And another question: do new lambos (murcie, gallardo) use vw/audi electronics or not? And what about Diablo? Has it electronics which requires oficiall dealership tools? Thanks for replies.

You dont really need the diagnositc equipment in Ferraris, as in almost every case, if something has stopped working, it will either start working again of its own accord, or you just find where the bad contact is.

Read the manual that came with the car from new. The amount of times it mentions 'most likely a bad electrical contact' in the Manual for the F355 is amazing considering how much a customer would have just parted with for their new car.

Er, you do on a 360. SD1's are used a fair bit on the 360 if there is an electrical issue or warning light. Electrical issues do happen now and again, but buying the best car you can afford is always a good idea smile

The SD1 is a specialised bit of kit which most modern Ferrari's connect to when in for servicing and faut finding. Its expensive to buy for a main dealer/indie because it is bespoke for Ferrari's. Some indies have access to one, but not all. Most of the well known indies have one.

In part answer to the Lambo question, really depends on what year the Diablo is....(Lambo guys correct me if I am wrong smile )

One thing I learned from my ownership of a 355 is always use a specialist with SD1/SD2.I had an intermittent problem with my car and sent it to a well known specialist who didnt have the diagnostic kit. They told me that the engine was knackered and gave me the car back with filthy oil stained seats, tools left in the engine compartment eek and a 4 figure bill.
I then sent the car to another specialist who did have the kit and once it was hooked up it straight away diagnosed a faulty injector due to damage to the wiring loom(the first specialist had damaged the loom when they took the engine out to do the cambelt service).
One new injector and wiring loom later the car ran like brand new.I just wish I'd taken it to the specialist the the diagnostic kit in the first place!

You can always get someone to bring the machine to you

iirc before Ferrari Eygpt opened one of the 430 owners in Cairo got Verdi to fly out there to fix his car

Sorry, I was talking about more minor electrical problems such as the driver electric window or the suspension ligh coming on.

Hi! The dealership will collect the car, repair or service and then return it.

On tha Gallardo the whole electrical system is carry over Audi apart from the engine EC/u which is made by EFI Technology and badged as Lamborghini LEI.

Theorecticaly the diagnostic work via OBD II and are standard messages via the CAN bus with just different connectors.

The RAC man who cam to look at my car when I called Lambo Assistance once hooked up his laptop and off he went.

It really shouldn't be an issue for any half decent garage who know what they are doing with OBDII.

Sorry to hijack but as it's relevant, rather than start a new thread, I thought I'd ask here...

  • IS* there an OBDII socket on an Early 2WD Diablo (91-93)?!
If so, where is it? I looked under the steering column and passenger side and couldn't see one!

What's the fixation with the electronics?

Why not the mechanicals, or the bodywork? If anything happens to any of those you could well be into a whole lot more money.
