On the 500, sounds like whirring and gets faster/louder with revs, more so when cold but also when warm but seems quieter. Seems to be in the alternator area. Could it be the ignition module thing?
Been there about a week now and seems to be getting worse so I guess something will die soon.
Any ideas?

More likely the alternator belt I'd have thought. I expect it'll break en route to the Growl.

Could be the alternator itself, the belt,or the tensioner(it is serp isnt it?).Alternator or tensioner are favourite. The tensioner(bearing) is not an uncommon failure, mine showed signs by metallic dust gathering on the front of the tensioner pulley wheel.Easy to check the tensioner, just rotate to slacken the belt, and you should be able to tell a knackered bearing in situ.

Or when its running be very carefull and get a long screwdriver or bar and place it near the tensioner mounting, place your ear against the other end,and if the bearing is starting to go you will be able to tell...

Yes it is a serp. Belt was replaced fairly recently at service as the old one was looking like it had seen better days. Its in the boot as a spare so will swap them over to see if it makes a difference.
Thanks for all the advice.

It is dead easy try some WD40 on the tensioner pulley bearing.

I'd put my money on the belt tensioner bearing... Take the belt off and turn the tensioner pulley round, mine was rough as hell last week before a trackday at Snett (it had been getting noisier and noiser). A quick trip to a Landrover specialist and £30 later it was fixed in a couple of minutes and running lovely and smooth.

Is this LR part number ERR3440? Looks identical to the one on the car.
Way too many options - AC, ACE, etc.
Or is it ERR6439? Both look the same to me.
Do I need a gasket?
This is the one with the bolt isn't it so I'll need a new bolt too.

Only jealous cause you had to be away at 6am. We'd only been back for the White Horse for just over 2 hours by then. Surprised we didn't bump into you somewhere.
