Mini Convertible

Im having problems with the roof on my 2004 (04) plate Mini Cooper Convertible. When trying to drop the top the o/s will not release. I took it to my local Mini dealer who have looked at it and confirmed that the cable has snapped and needs replacing. For this to be done they want to charge me.........wait fot it £750!! The car is no longer in warranty so Im screwed!

Has anyone else had the same problems? If so can anyone advise of a cheaper repair?
