Galway, Connemara and Donegal
Discussion
Just posted this on the Octane forums and it seemed rude not to include here
I've just got back to Dublin from an epic tour round the west of Ireland. Over the next week I'm going to post up the route etc, but in the meantime here are a few photos. Enjoy!
Itinery was basically:
Saturday: Dublin to Salthill campsite in Galway.
Sunday: Cars and Coffee, Galway, then a trip an a whim to the Burren.
Monday: Galway to Cong via Clifden and Westport.
Tuesday: Conga to Rosapenna via Sligo, Donegal.
Wednesday back to Dublin.
At Black Head lighthouse. No matter how remote you are you can always guarantee a badly parked Rover 600 inches from your bumper. Oh well. I only realised afterwards how close I was to the Cliffs of Moher which was a shame.

At least I was given a nice sunset that night. This is from the campsite.

Next day I headed towards Clifden, via the R336.

Unfortunately the weather took a turn for the worse and by the time I got to the Alcock and Brown monument it was pretty bleak. Frankly if I were them and the weather was as miserable, I wouldn't have bothered landing, turned round and gone home again :-)

Next I popped in to say hello to Mark at the wonderful Rosleague hotel. No pictures here unfortunately as the sun just wasn't playing. So I had a lovely lunch and took Mark for a spin. The roads round there are so bad it's a real shame. No chance of any real speed.
Anyway, on to Westport where I found little picnic spot.

Then, I headed to Cong via Louisburgh (the world's most ******* speed bumps) and the Doo Lough Pass. Now this I liked. It really was quite remote.

and I couldn't resist a sneaky drive on the shore!

Then I got into Cong amidst a huge downpour and spent a miserable night in the tent. The campsite was a rip-off - €20 per night and not particularly abundant facilities. So much so that the absence of even a pointed stick in the loos forced me to leave a present for them...
Anyway, Tuesday brings another day and a target unknown in Donegal. I saw a campsite marked on the map right near the top of the county at Melmore Head so I thought that would be a suitable destination. After some epic roads - long, smooth sweeping bends broken up with wide straights for long overtakes I hit Rosguil.

Eventually I found the best campsite I've ever stayed at with awesome views.

I popped to the local pub - the Singing Pub for the best Guinness I've had to date, before nipping to the other side of the pensinula to get a shot of the sunset.

Guys you've got some great roads, some ****ty ones and some really ****ty ones, but all in all it was a great trip and one I will do again.

Really good pics - tell more about your camera equipment?! or is it just skill in taking the shots?
I'm Irish myself (Co. Kildare) and keep meaning to take the cerb over, but begrudge the ferry prices (amongst the most expensive in the world as ferry crossings go) especially when I'm close to Luton Airport.
How much attention does the cerbera demand? I know "Ireland" has a yellow one somewhere in the Dublin region, but not sure if theres many more at all out there? Must have attracted some notice!

If I'd known you were over I'd have met up, we could have hooned around in a little convoy!

I use a Canon 5D with a Canon 70-200mm f/2.8 lens, and for the wide angles a Canon 17-40mm f/4. I also use Lee ND grad filters which are great for balancing out the exposure. As for skill taking the shots, well it comes down to practise and a little ability I suppose and luck with the light.Ferry was £144 each way with Irish Ferries which is expensive but I figured it was actually a cheap holiday.

I didn't see another TVR over there but I knew of alinton and Ireland. The car got a fair degree of attention but I'm glad it's not an attention grabbing colour as I wouldn't have liked too much. As it was I felt a complete muppet when driving through little villages and being louder than a loud thing!Edited by Timmy2TARs on Wednesday 29th April 23:01
