How to buy privately?

Potentially picking up a cheap faired bike (1st bike) and wondering what i should be specifically looking out for when going to view it?
Oily spots, brakes, suspension, fork, general condition.. ?

Is it more recommendable to get it looked over by a mechanic of sorts, and if so, who? bike is based in South London ...

I honestly think that unless you maintain your own bike (in which case you'll know what to look for) you should get someone who does to check it over. I've tried to work through lists of stuff given to me and it's hard work as you have nothing to compare the results against so you're none the wiser on much of it. Can't recommend anyone, sorry.
