Can anyone recommend any good roads in the Oban area? I am planning a long weekend in the near future travelling from Lancashire and staying just south of Oban.
I’ve been up to Fort William recently but in the diesel runabout. I promised myself id return asap in a car more suited to the fantastic roads and scenery.
Id planned on getting to Glasgow as quick as possible and then taking the more interesting roads west to Oban.
I’ve seen recommendations for the A814 (runs paralell to the A82 Loch Lomond) then I was thinking rejoin the A83 past rest and be thankfull. After that im open to suggestions.

If all goes to plan there will be 3 evo's on the trip so should be good fun!

How is the availability of Super unleaded in the area?

Thanks in advance, Rick

Here you arethumbup

I know the route are based a little away from Oban but they are easily adaptable. You will find it difficult NOT to find good driving. I wish I was going too.

Don't know about Oban, but going northwest out of Fort William,. The Esso and the BP both have Super unleaded.

A816 Oban to Lochgilphead is fantastic. Very twisty. Either loop back via Inverary or continue on the A83 to Campbeltown.

The Oban - Ballachulish - Tyndrum loop is also fantastic.

If you're on the A87 heading North-West at any point, hang a left at Shiel Bridge on to an unclassified road. That's a good 'un as well, and follow signs for the ferry from Glenelg - Kyle Rhea. You end up on a little ferry with a revolving deck that takes you across to Skye

Also if you stop off at Applecross, the Applecross Inn does some of the best food in the country.

I was accross in Shieldaig on Saturday, great driving roads and wonderful scnenery. Going back again sometime this month

Suggested mod to petermansell's maps - combine the two -go round the mull loop, then at Salen take the A861 north to Lochailort and use the second map for the route round Skye

Make sure you drive betwen Tarbet and Inverarnan on the A82.thumbup

The surface has seen better days, and if you get stuck behind something it's not so good (only a couple of overtaking spots), however if you get it to yourself, it's

A route I've not seen anyone mention is to get from A82 into Helensburgh. Thence the A814 to Arrochar(via Faslane) and on to Tarbet (via Loch Long). An interesting diversion is through Garelochead to take the Whistlefield road back to the A814. (rather nice hill on whistlefield - history is that about 50 years ago it was a feat to get up without a run in any gear ).This is an alternative route to the lower stretch of the Loch Lomond road and should (although it's been upgraded a bit )give you an idea of road conditions years ago .

My all time favourite road, the loop around Kinlochleven at Glencoe rather than taking the ballachulish bridge. The best way is clockwise from Onich to Glencoe via Kinlochleven. Police stations in Glencoe and Kinlochleven(this one might be shut now). Even the single track is plenty wide enough. Look out for the wild goats!
