I friend of mine is buying a '98 Chimp. His insurance co have told him that it was not fitted with a Thatcham approved alarm/immob as standard, and therefore he will need to fit one. I thought that Chimps were fitted with Meta alarms from new, which are Thatcham approved. Can anyone confirm what is correct for a '98 car?

Many thanks,

Neil

I have a letter in my service manual from TVR giving the full details. In summary, it states that all Chimeras built since 96 have an alarm and immobiliser, but because they use different sensors, it comes in as a Thatcham II system.

My 98 4.0L is a Meta rated as Cat 1 - factory fitted from new.

Yes but because of the way TVR fitted it your rating is now Cat 2.

Edited to include...There is reference to this in Bible ed 2

My understanding is that 96-98 TVR fiteed a Meta Aquilla M99/36T. This system has now been delisted by thatcham and is no longer aproved.

However from 1999 onwards TVR fitted the Meta Aquilla M99/36T2 This is still aproved by thatcham as a Cat 1 I believe.

I was recently advised this by a colleague so I'm not 100% sure if this is correct, but he's normally very reliable with his technical info....

I have a 2000 Chim and that came with a “Meta Aquila M99 / M36T2” which is a Thatcham Cat1 Alarm.
Any Thatcham Cat2 Immobiliser can be upgraded to Cat1 by fitting a suitable Alarm such as a “Meta M99T.” The upgraded system would be insurance approved in exactly the same way as any other Cat1.

Provided it's done by an approve installer. Cat 1 is a whole system. Car, immobiliser and alarm. All three parts are required for cat 1 so home installations are not approved and will most likely downgrade your existing rating. Buying a cat 1 doesn’t mean you have a cat 1 approved installation. I believe TVR fell foul of this when they installed some systems themselves. i.e. not by approved installer.
