I hear the 3.0d has a crap turbo...

Other than that, think they are pretty solid!

I had an 02 E39 530d from new up to 122000 miles in September last year. It was replaced with a 2000 mile E61 530dT Sport, now on 30000 miles.
The E39 needed a low pressure fuel pump under warranty at 58000, a rubber propshaft coupling at 70000, a replacement turbo (bearing failure) at 80000 and an auxiliary electric fan at 120000.
The turbo failure does seem to be a bit of a lottery despite dealer history and allowing the car to idle/cool down after a long motorway run.
Superb car though.

I had an 02 530d which needed a new turbo last year at 56,000 miles.

Apart from that it was a lovely car
