Equals a sound akin to a ships foghorn on my bike (I know I'm not alone in this!)

So what causes it? Is the pad material?

Not sure but would be interested to know.

I've tried both organic/resin and sintered/metal pads, and both types do it. However, having different front and rear discs means I can have the proper twin tone train horn sound biggrin

Try a bit of grease between the backing plates and the pistons?

Have you made sure your disc's are clean, using disc cleaner,

I have used hope c2 in the past and now my bikes have hope moto v2 brakes, never really had a problem with noise in the wet, they have made a noise in the past, but it goes quickly as it appears.

used avids they were a bit more noisey but not sure why.

but I have heard some really noisey disc's when out in the woods (from other peoples bikes)

but i would not be tempted to put grease anywhere near the piston and the back of the pad if it was me.

Nor me! I can understand the theory behind the idea but there's alot of scope to get it wrong.

Blimey - it only needs a tiny smear; you'd have to be pretty clumsy to make a pig's ear of it.

Alternatively try removing calipers and any adaptors and check for indications of fretting any any of the mating surfaces; address with either copperslip or studlock, depending on how brave you're feeling.

Or buy some ear defenders.

I've herd of this. Copper Grease between the pad and piston to stop the squealing.

This is also done on cars.

Getting your disc mounts faced might cure it. If they're Hope brakes they do love to squeal though biggrin

I've noticed you can get a tool for this for the pricey sum of £99.

How much is it in the shops?

I have the disc mounts faced on all my frames and forks, which is why I expect I do not get noisey disc brake's. Forgot that in earlier reply.

Got a hope facing tool.

+1 for the copper grease on the back of the pads, but also check the tightness of the caliper mounting bolts - my rear disc got very noisy and the two mounting bolts were loose causing the whole caliper to vibrate and squeek.

A similar sound is made as the water is boiled off the rotor.

I was going to post and say it's supposed to be copper grease you use. Apparently that's a good cure to stop the noise which is mainly vibration of the pad against the pistons. But the compund in some hope brakes is horrendously noisy. I've changed to Shimano brakes and they're so nice and quiet in compaarison...
