Anyone know how to clean an EGR valve?

I've got a 04 1.8 Focus TDCi that has not long started to chuck smoke out the back. Lost a bit of power and the MPG gone down too. Figured it is a clogged up EGR valve, heard it is fairly easy to clean up. I'm fairly ok with a spanner and stuff and dont mind having a crack at it.. Anyone got and instructions for me to follow?

Hi,I am no mechanic but I changed the EGR valve on my connect van 1.8 tdci and it was fairly straight forward. If its the same as mine it is held onto the engine block with two bolts,also a clamp on the exaust manifold,there is a very thin metal washer on this so take care not to damage this.there are two water pipes going to it aswell.The only problem I had was lining up one of the bolts when refitting to the block,but apart from that it was straight forward.you will have to remove one or two pieces to gain access,but sure you will see that when you start the job in hand.Hope that hels and good luck.took me about two hours.
