Looking at trading up my R8 for an 07ish Gallardo after the summer...taking advantage of the closing price differential. SL prices seem pretty soft in comparison to what they were a year ago and compared to a "normal" G - looking at classifieds I would guess you would get one under 120k already, heading below £110k before long, not much different from comparable "Neras" and only about £10k more than standard cars.
What are the downsides of the SL - I'd use it most days. Is it a better car, or too much of a compromise for mostly road use? Also, are there likely to be any manuals kicking about - everything seems to be egear. Thanks

You can use it everyday. The only real downside is the depreciation if you bought new. The egear is as good as the 430's F1. Personally I wouldnt buy a manual. Manual was a no cost option.
Graypaul have an orange car which listed at £170k which is now £120k. Its only done 1000 miles. I know the owner just picked up his Scud.

I've done nearly 6k weekend miles in 8 months and the only hassles are the low speed ride plus the usual Gallardo compromises ( access, parking, reversing, visibility, steering lock, 12mpg, the attention, keeping the mileage down ! ). Cruising noise levels are fine. The ride settles down at speed.
Try and get a car with lifting gear and storage, avoid the optional harnesses.
BTW, the new price difference between a Gallardo and an SL was not that great if you factor in the additional kit : fancy wheels and paint, E-gear, clear engine cover, branding, lights, sports suspension, alcantara steering wheel etc all cost a fortune as options. Aguably the kit removed adds to the differential.

I also agree that SL prices are very good at the moment even at the main dealers which is suprising as are they not on a limited run of models or is the LP560 hitting residuals??. Note that R8 prices are also taking a hit at the moment so you may be suprised what you are offered as a trade-in. A friend has a black manual 08 R8(2kmiles) and he cant shift it.What are the downsides of the SL - I'd use it most days. Is it a better car, or too much of a compromise for mostly road use? I should probably test the R8 value before getting ahead of myself then. Going by classifieds they seem to be holding up OK, but that doesn't tell you if they're selling. I'm just thinking that I'd rather be stuck in an SL negative equity trap for next couple of years than an R8 one! In truth, the Audi is great car for now, but was always going to be temporary; SL is one I could see myself holding on to for a while. The manual was a no-cost option, and I could be tempted by that, as an old fashioned rev-matching heel and toe downshift with into a hairpin is one of the few pleasures left...having said that the E gear would certainly be better the other 99.99% of the time...
Right now I'm thinking of an early sale of the R8 if possible then wait a month or three and see what's shifted from dealers on the SL front. Always tried to enjoy cars and not worry about depreciation etc, but right now it's pretty stark seeing an 08 SL with 1k miles at £155k next to an 07 with £1k miles at £120k, and can't see values picking up any time soon, especially if trade-ins for LP560 come on the scene. Similarly, even if it was an option, couldn't bring myself to buy a new LP560 knowing it will drop similar amounts on way off forecourt. That will have to wait until the credit crunch is over!
Thanks all for advice.

Just back from a 1300km round trip to Spa ... dunno who says these cars are too harsh for everyday, my wife drove it most of the way there and back and I had to prise her kicking & screaming out of the driving seat. Big fuel tank meant we got most of the way there before needing to fill up too.
If you need music for long trips, we have an ipod connected to a bose sound dock, worked a treat
ETA: it's a manual ... personally don't like egear
