Trip to Italy?

Automobili Lamborghini will probably be closed - it's August!
You could try just turning up and see if they are doing any museum or factory tours this month but I'd say it's unlikely... sometimes those 'cultural' things apply even in the car industry and in August, Italy's factories on the whole are mostly shut...
Can't help with any of the other places / factories but I recall it's almost impossible to get closer to the Ferrari factory than the shop at the front of the building(s) whatever the month involved...
Good luck whatever you do - Italy is much, much more than just car factories!
edited to add, needlessly I'm sure... you would be wanting to go to the Pagani factory where they make Zondas... it's not the company name, 'just' their main product...\

Both the Lamborghini and the Ferrari museum (Galerea) will be open. Just no factory tours because they are closed. Zonda will be open though, just make a call and they will organise some thing with you. They are the most friendliest of all the manufacturers. In fact on one occasion i just turned up to there showroom which is shared with there factory. And they were very friendly towards my family and myself.
I have been 3 times now, even in August. But yes in Italy alot is closed for the summer. But there is still alot to see.

Maserati dont have a museum now, they sold it to the Pannini family and it housed on their Parmesan cheese farm. That will undoubtley be open and it is just turn up and pay, wonder around, then when you have seen all there is to see (which is lots) you get cajolled into the 'farm shop' to part with more cash for all things parmesan.
The Ferrari Galeria will be open and that is turn up and pay, again lots to see and is ever changing as they dont have sufficient room to show all the exhibits in one go. If you go here make sure to have a look through every door as its a bit of a maze over 2 floors and you could easily miss things.
I think you will be lucky to get any factory tours on spec even if they are open. Ferrari is notoriously difficult to get into. The consolation is when you have been politely turned away the Montana resturaunt will be less busy without the Ferrari boys working. Worth a look for the memorabilia alone not to mention the food.
If your into bikes also the Ducati museum is located at the factory and may be open but the factory undoubtedly will not.
Enjoy!

Which reminds me that the Cavallino restaurant opposite the factory has been shut when i visited in August. But the Montana isnt booked up in the evening so just turn up and eat. Great food as well.
Oh and visit Tonys, its a very short walk down the Ferrari main street and can be seen from the road side. Its an independent Ferrari garage and they are always working on interesting Ferrari's. People stand by the shutters taking pictures, so there used to it.

HERE - I have heard that they are the most welcoming even to people not looking to be customers but just love there cars. I think I will get my Italian friend to ring when i get there and see if we can pop in. i'd love to see the F layed bare.
3200gt - Yes i did think that about the Ferrari Factory im sure you must have to have friends in high places to get anywhere near it, thanks for the heads up on the Montana resturaunt is this the one over from the test track? didnt think about Ducati cheers will slip that one in then.

How easy is it to go round the factory and museums?
can you turn up and pay or is there like a waiting list?
as mentioned no factory tours as it's ferr'Agosto (the summer shut down)can you turn up and pay or is there like a waiting list?
the Lamborghini collection is free but you have to pay at Ferrari - you can pitch up at both
worth going to the tourist office in Mondena and speaking to the ladies in there - there's a dairy farm close to Sant'Agata with a private collection of cars (over 100) and motorbikes which is free to view too
