I'm so demoralised by all this, and the increasing speed bumps / numpty drivers, speed cameras... I am going to buy an off roader. Yep, I know it's not very PH. But stuff it. Getting stuck in traffic in a sportscar is naff, getting hit by numpty Volvo driver is appalling (car was2 days old FFS !!!), and the constant threat of speed camera over-enforcement has got to me.
So I will have an environmentally damaging Defender TDi, with, as Denny said so eloquently "f**k off big bull bars" on it.
I promise to get out of your way whenever I can, but come spring, I will be sitting 4ft higher from the road, and loving the look of terror on numptys who try cutting me up on roundabouts.
No bikes for me, they're only jail-bait, no more TVRs or VX's that can be written off in a 5mph impact (I've seen it, beleive me!!!! [sad but true]).
No more slowing down for speed bumps.
No more braking for Granny who pulls out on you.
No more Speed-ban fear with a top speed of 85mph.
No more worry about parking knocks, scares about driving up kerbs, or easily damages wheels.
Hmmm. No more fast cornering too, but with another 9000 cameras planned in the next year, and mobile units on the rise.... is this going to be so bad???
Yeah I'm chickening out, selling out, and I hate having to do it, but I have no option - to me a sports car / bike should be regulary thrashed. This option is becoming increasingly risky. Just 'cos you've got the power, don't mean you've got the right - quoted from Motorhead, but could well be a Blairism.
Hmmmmm. The other option is the '67 Mustang. Oooh-errr. That is a good idea.... I'll look at a few & decide.
Sorry to have raved for ages, it's been greiving me big time.

tee hee, so do I, but the b'stards have endless amounts of OUR money to spend on cameras. We may win against them for a while, but with so many numpty drivers going at 2/3's the NSL, they don't even need cameras FFS !!! all it takes is one pleb in a Metro to do the work of 100 gatsos.
My attitude is getting to be, buy a bike with no plates, or a slow LARGE vehicle that intimidates numpties, and can STUMP PULL. If you get my drift !

Do you remember the headline in the Sun before Major won election? Picture of Kinnock in a lightbulb and:
"Will the last person to leave please turn the lights off"
I feel that Labour are trying to do the same again. I think they have no contact with grassroots human beings and how they are persecuting us...
If I could get legal aid I'd start a ECHR case along the lines of removing my freedom to move

What you need is an Overfinch Defender.
It looks fairly stock, but with a 5.7ltr Chevy engine...
Friend of mine had an 8.2ltr V8 Jeep Renegade, with nitrous! That would do the trick!!

I used to have a Defender, affectionately known as Tonka. Fantastic car for London, it was the pick-up version so 360 visibility. Even Black Cabs were known to give way.
For bull bars I'd recommend a winch bumper. Like the stuff Dave Bowyer does.
As for the 85mph bit, not strictly true. Minor mods, and mine cruised at 90
I was clocked going a bit faster than I should have been, on the A1(M), very pleasant BiB let me off with a warning!! Not what I was expecting when the conversation started.
"You were timed over a measured mile, and at no point did your speed drop below 100mph. What exactly do you think you're doing?"
"Would you accept: Keeping up with the flow of traffic?"
"Well just go easy lad." (Or something similar.)
Wouldn't get that leniency from a
Camera I had a nice run on Saturday down from Edinburgh to Alnwick on the A68 and A697. Few Gatsos, but you'd have to be blind to miss em, few numpties, but plenty of straights to get by em. Managed to maintain a high average speed in safety and had fun so it's not all doom and gloom. It would have been crap if I'd taken the alternative route down the A1 though.
I must say I suspect that the prevalance of these infernal things will make parts of Britain unpleasant to visit and they will lose tourist business as a result.
I am practically certain that North Wales will feel the effects.
And I know I shan't be visiting lowland Scotland again...other than to pass through on my way north. Pointless. Long tedious single carriageway roads with cameras in the overtaking opportunities so getting past that 52mph juggernaut becomes impossible.

Not totally true Don, see my post above, some of the major arterial routes are like this ie the A1, and A68 to an extent, but there are routes that are fantastic. I never take the A702 from the M74 to Edinburgh, The parallel A701 is much emptier and more fun.

Scotland certainly has some amazing roads - and I keep coming back to find them. So I agree with you. But the GATSOs on the routes we used through Perthshire got a bit oppressive.
Of course. Berkshire is just as bad and Hampshire is on its way too - where I live.

All together now 'I am a driving God!'

I tend to treat speed cameras as an extra challenge now, if my observation is up to scratch I should see them and shouldn't get nabbed. You are right though the one time where they are very annoying is when you are contemplating an overtake.
In Perthshire try the A93 from Scone to Braemar via the Devil's elbow, a fantastic roller coaster of a road.

there's about 40 scameras between newcastle & edinburgh on the A1 - and it's only single carriageway! The A697 is a brilliant road from coldstream - newcastle as there are no scameras at all!

I live in Lowland Scotland, the whole Country is full of great roads, just get off the main ones, there are alot of smaller A roads and good B roads with very little traffic, (which often pulls over to help faster cars pass) and no Cameras.
The one good thing about the whole Scamera system is that their main purpose is revenue generation, if you travel on a road where only five cars that day have broken the speed limit, and the road is 50miles from where the Talivan lives, you don't have to be a genius to calculate the likely profit, hence the quiet B road with great bends will be camera free, the Talivan's will be sitting on a Motorway bridge where every numpty can managed to drive at 15mph above the speed limit.
Buy a large scale map and have fun
