Doing lots of motorway miles in my A3 Tdi.

Really need a cruise control as I'm getting very bored having to worry about staying at 70ish with all the hidden speedtrap BiB scattered all over the place.

Can this be retrofitted?

How much would that cost?

Can it be done as a DIY project in a similar was that some people have added ESP?

Or - any recommendations for a replacement vehicle with cruise control for around £8k?

Ta.

I know it can be retrofitted to the A2, you might have a look on their forum, I think there's a chap there that does it, simply changes the stalk, and re-codes via VAGcom software.

Yes it can be retrofitted but would have to take it to a dealer to code it into the vehicle. No idea on cost sorry

Thanks.

Just found this on Ebay http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/AUDI-CRUISE-CONTROL-KIT-A2-1...

So it's certainly possible.

Would cost me an extra £50 call out fee which takes it over £200 so I think I'd plan to fit it myself and ask a dealer to activate it.

Anyone done this?

Depending on where you live, Shark90 over on www.tyresmoke.net is a contact for cruise control.

VAGCOM will do it, no need for dealer involvement.

As long as the car has a 'drive-by-wire' throttle then it's a case of swapping the indicator stalk, plugging it into the existing port in the wiring loom (it is easier to have one loom that you plug optional extras into rather than loads of different types) and activating it in ECU.

Mkiv Golfs / Boras can be done for not a lot over a £100 using genuine parts and VAG.com.

If the car has a cable throttle it's a lot more involved as the wiring loom and ECU are different.

Yes it's a drive by wire.

Did the test where you run the rpm at 2k in neutral with the handbrake on. Pressing the footbrake but leaving the accelerator pedal where it is drops the rpm to 1400.

Excited now - going to buy the kit tomorrow and have a go at fitting it over the weekend.

If you don't have Vag.com you may try posting here www.uk-mkivs.net for a local member to activate it for you. The usual cahrge is a couple of drinks!! You may wish to take the opportunity to activate the Speed Locking function and the hidden features off the 'MAF' computer - like miles left in the tank.

Ebay price is expensive for supply only. I did a DIY retrofit on my MKIV golf for around £50, although it did take around 3 hours as you have to remove various bits including steering wheel to change the stalk and unbolt the wiper mechanism to get to the wiring connector under the bonnet.

If you do just want the parts, go to www.vagparts.com , click on the online shop link and seach for cruise kit.

If it's like the Golf you will also need a couple of unusual tools; think I had to buy some spline bits to get the steering wheel off and something else that slips my mind just now.

Quick update.

Ordered the Mk4 Golf Tdi kit from Vagparts for £63 including delivery.

Arrived 3 days later.

Has a play today and got as far as taking the airbag off.

You need an Alen key to do that.

Steering wheel is held on with a female splined bolt (as AdrianR mentioned) and I don't have a spline set so mission was aborted at that point.

Anyone know the exact measurement of spline needed for an A3?

Looked like a 10mm 12 point spline to me but I'll probably buy a set anyway.

More to follow.

I used an excellent picture guide on the web from someone called 'Foxy', but it seems to have gone now. May still have a download of it somewhere, drop me a note through my profile if you get stuck.

Right all done now - just need to find someone with Vagcom software.

There's a list at vagcomlocator.com so I've emailed a bloke in the same location to see if he will do it for a few beer tokens.

Job's a bit of a pain as you need to strip off the wipers and trim to get to a junction box on the bulkhead.

If I lived in London (or was staying there) I'd get the Ebay fitted option for £100 labour as it's worth it.

So - the 1J0998527A kit is the correct one for A3 up to 2003.

The kit comes with an instruction booklet which is reasonably good.

Things to watch out for;

1. You need a 12mm spline for the steering wheel.
2. The bottom cover of the steering column switch trim needs to be pulled forwards and to the right to come off.
3. You need some silkaflex or silicone sealant to replace the wiper trim.
4. To place the wired pins into the connector on the bulkhead you need to push the pink locking tab outwards about 3mm by pushing the J-shaped piece into the plug
5. Get hold of a tool to remove the fuse 5 cable from the chamber - I didn't have one and this part of the job proved to be the worst. I ended up having to relocate the fuse to a spare chamber. Not sure what the tool is called but it's listed as VAS 1978/4. It's not specific to Audi/VW so would be useful to have around anyway.
6. You'll need cable ties and a cutter to make it all tidy when routing the loom.
7. A torque wrench is needed to torque up the steering wheel nut to 50 - 60Nm.
8. Line up a friendly Vagcom owner as dealers aren't interested in helping for ecu activation as they haven't ripped you off a couple of hundred quid to fit the kit.

Hopefully I'll be up and running shortly.
