POLICE chiefs will be directly elected by the public under Tory plans for the biggest shake-up of law and order in generations.
Chief constables and divisional commanders who fail to tackle crime waves will be axed by voters.
Shadow Home Secretary Oliver Letwin is to announce the plan for US-style directly-elected police chiefs next month.
Mr Letwin will tell police superintendents today: “We will push power down from the politicians and bureaucrats, through the police force hierarchies and to the police officers on the front line against crime and disorder.”
---------------------------
However, if you read the BBC site:
http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/uk/3094794.stm it is more worrying.
Top cops will be accountable to locally elected politicians, so chances are we might see the same old cr@p.

Excellent so the tory answer to all this is tie up the
chief in political bullshit (so thats another copper not doing his job - fantastic :rolleys: )
The police need to be self governing not tied up in politics - running for chief ans shite like that, can you imagine you will get 3 years of total persecution of the motorist etc and in the last year before going for office not a speed camera in sight and prisons bursting with young offenders - 100% clear up rate on burglaries etc, then day after the election let the little buggers out again and get back to making some money.
This is absolute shite.

On a second note, with them being elected we are more likely to see more like brunstrom not less.
Election only count the votes of people who care enough to get off their arses and vote, canvassing an election is about getting people off their arses - but only in you are sure they will vote for you.
Brunstrom and his cronies will have the backing of the anti speed campaigners, transport 2000 etc to help their campaings where as anyone that stands up and says down with gatso's will be publically crucified and become unelectable.
Oh well i never did like this country anyway, time to sell up and get that chateu in france i have been on about.

Its a good idea assuming that people are aware of all the facts pertaining to each candidate and can make a society decision before placing an X in a box.
However, given the current state of this nations inhabitants I feel this will take a slippery slope and coat it with Teflon.
The harsh fact of the matter is that its not the Polices fault but the publics...

I agree with Dontlift to a certain degree.
We don't want the Police cheifs to be getting dragged into political bullsh@t and running around campaining. They need to be in the office or out on the street getting with the public to understand the problems. I believe that currently the Government are to far divorced from the requirements of the majority of the public and as a result the targets they set the force are not what we want!!
Also the current mailise in the voting public shown in local and the last general election means that the person voted in won't represent everybody, just those who could be bothered to turn up. Again, another rash and poorly concieved idea that becuase it works in the US its bound to work overhere.

Actually if this is done right it could be a very good thing.
The Police Chiefs do NOTHING in terms real police-work. They are *managers* of those who do. Since it is this *management* (the setting of policy and seeing that it is implemented) that I have a problem with - I would like to have a direct influence on it.
So either the Police Chief himself needs to be elected, problem is that it might be hard getting a good spread of candidates since to be qualified for the job requires a long career in the Force, OR an official with direct powers over the Police in the area.
I would NOT want the Police Chief to report to a currently elected position - too many other political factors would get in the way. Nope. Needs to be a seperate position (Sherrif?) so that ONLY local policing policy is at issue when voters decide who they want in the post.
Oh..and the elected official needs to have enough power to force the Police Chief to do what he wants.
I know this sounds like the emasculation of the policing system but its not. Its merely a way for the public to finally have some recourse to show their displeasure when their public servants don't do anything they want.
