where can i get a decent service reset tool that can display fault codes for a '01 BMW?

How much do you want to spend? Speak to a few local speialists and see what they say? You can go from cheap well dody deals on ebay through to £4000 plus bits of software from Autologic.

If you have an old laptop with a serial port (important!) then get an EDIABAS cable from eBay (about £50) and bingo you have a full diagnostics setup. (I'm assuming this is for your E39 5 series in the photo on your profile?) Or if you are near Bristol, come and plug into mine.
