a friend of mine, got himself an 51 3.0 v6 4wd x type and he recons it,s faster round a track and just in genral than a 4.0 xk8, mainly because its lighter and 4wd he says, any truth in this? i doubt it

I wouldn't have thought so considering the xk8 is limited to 155mph and does the 0-100mph sprint in around 16sec.

the manual 3.0 x-type takes about 18/19secs and only does around 145mph.

edited to add the difference in weight between the two is not alot.. x-type 3.0 manual 1595kgs - xk8 1653kgs

Errr, no. But I bet it is a darn sight more fun to whisk the X around the track than it is the XK8.

I think it may be closer than you think on the track. Lap speed is mainly determined by corner speed. The four wheel drive X corners brilliantly whilst the Xk is more of a cruiser. 0-60 the Xk should be quite a bit quicker though, 4litre v8 vs 3litre v6, no comparison! It's a shame that lap comparison site only lists the new xk vs the S type as the new xk is considerably lighter than the old one and the S type 3litre is considerably heavier than the Xtype.

Just a quick point, according to EVO magazine the old XK8 weighs 1685kg whilst the 3.0Xtype manual weighs 1555kgs thats a difference of 130kgs or just over 20 stones (286 pounds). A lot of weight to lug around a circuit!

Or plus 8% extra weight.

Neither the X-Type nor the XK8 are sports cars so who cares which would win around a track. For me though the style, performance and road presence of the XK8 would win the day, was very close to buying one but I do prefer a manual box.

granted its a bit more heavy, but dosent the xk have wider tyres and( better suspension i think lol) as well as an overall lower profile in the car, sure that can make up? my main concern would be the auto vs the man on a circut, we gonna give it a bash soon at knockhill, put my cash on the xk

I reckon it'd be pretty close. XK wins on power, but loses on weight & the auto would deffo hamper it (even using the J gate).

Also, X has 15 years chassis developement advantage over XK8. The origins of thats car's suspension date from the 1980's XJ40.

confused
The X is derived from the the Mondeo, which in it's self is no bad thing, it was always reckoned by the press to be a bloody good handling car.

The XK8 chassis is derived from the XJS and the DB7, only they had a lot more money to play with when they did the XK8 and had had the experience of doing the DB7 chassis first.

I'd have thought more XJ40 know how went into the XK8 than the X type.

Interesting but as someone said, perhaps pointless, as neither are circuit cars. As it happens, I have a 51 X-type 3.0 and a new-style XK and know Knockhill well. If it's wet (as it often is there!) the X type will be ahead with 4wd. If dry, neither will be good in the corners and the XK's speed on the straights may win. But probably driver ability will be crucial!! But have fun.

Is that the racing green conversion? Do you think it works as well as the paddle shift on the new XK? I am really interested in how well this system works as I would love an XK but am put off by the standard auto box on the older models.
