started the car this morning to a horrible slapping noise, checked under the bonnet and the alternator belt is shredded to bits... i've only just replaced it in the last couple of weeks, not had a chance to check under there properly as was late for work but surely unless something is wrong under there this shouldn't happen....

Any pointers for what to look for when I get home?

You mightn't have tightened it properly, or used the wrong rib belt. Although the latter is pretty hard to do.
Did it make any squealing noises at any time? That is the sound of it slipping and causes it to wear prematurely.

The previous belt squealed like something i'm too polite to describe, which is why I changed it... just called MX5 parts and they have agreed to replace it, although my main concern is that something has gotten in there and torn the belt.

Is there evidence of a cut, or is it just frayed along its length?

It looks as though its in a few pieces eek

Both belts were off, and the belt that is still together looks pretty new, i'm starting to think that maybe it wasn't the alternator belt that shredded but the other (older) belt that I haven't changed... its frustating not having the car in front of me to take a look!!
