JDM Sat Navs

Has anybody gotten a JDM model sat nav to work outside of Japan? Reason I ask, my relative has a Honda wreckers, and has a few really nice Gathers/Alpine units in some front cuts but they are seemingly useless outside of Japan. Surely the OS comes loaded on the CD and the maps are an update CD?

Anyone?
