I want to buy somebody a nice bottle of Irish Whiskey who reciently done me a favour. I`ve been to the supermarket and a couple of off licenses but nothing really took my fancy, is there anywhere on the net when I can buy one bottle of something a bit special, nothing ostentatious just something a cut above the Jameson`s. Can anybody reccomend a good Irish Whiskey? I`ve been told that Blackbush and Bushmills are two good ones, but as a non alcoholic drinker I`m at the mercy of you lovely people.

Thank you in advance.

Connemara is pretty good, nice smooth single malt and not to pricey. Good looking stubby bottle as well.

Bushmills ... almost any Bushmills... from County Aaaaahhhhntrim in Nor'n I'r'n

John Powers' whiskeys if you can find any in the UK...

There are plenty of places that sell "Paddy's" which is erm, rubbish imo...

There are some glorious finer and more aged Jameson's - again, not necessarily available in the UK... one of the best is matured in old brandy barrels and is a) very, very expensive but b) f;kin perfection in whiskey, again imo...

How far from Holyhead, Stranraer or Fishguard are you? You could get the boat to Ireland and bring some back - you (probably) don't need a passport if you aren't flying there, even now...

Or you could fly, just remember almost EVERYTHING except petrol is expensive in the RoI compared to the UK.

There are some ace Whiskeys to be had though - I have my father-in-law in Enniskillen to thank for 'sampling' some of the better ones. A lot.

(Did you know that there are no known County Fermanagh-produced alcohol products for drinking, honestly, no known stuff like that at all ossifer, not at all. Sure an' the moonshine is very strong tonight and your wee head is gleaming? Are yis' arressin' me ya bks?)

Cheers for that, I looked on that thread but they all talk about Scotch, not Irish Whiskey. And being a non drinker I was after some recomendations.

Macallan is always a safe single malt bet.. Irish ones make me gag (figuratively), a little too viscous and creamy? for my tastes.

Middleton is rather fine but pricey, as I've already said Connemara is a good bet.

Ireland produces whiskey
Scotland produces whisky

Therefore you won't find a decent irish whisky.

Cheers,

I would respectfully disagree with the suggestion of Connemara - it is a handsome bottle, but IMHO the contents don't live up to the bottle. It's very peaty and smokey and a bit rough around the edges.

If you can get your hands on Mitchell's Green Spot, that's a bit unusual and special. It's distilled for Mitchell & Sons Wine Merchants on Dawson Street in Dublin, it's not overly expensive and it's absolutely delicious - beautifully rounded, toffee and caramel with a hint of mint on the finish. If Mitchells will deliver to you (they have a website but they're a fairly small operation), that would be my recommendation.

If not, Bushmills 16 year old or Jameson 18 year old are both delicious - far superior to the generic versions. They're not overly difficult to find - lots of online whiskey merchants will deliver to your door.

Another step up the price ladder is Midleton Very Rare. Beautifully presented in wooden case, numbered bottle, etc., etc. - for my taste, it's a little too refined and delicate.

We picked up a Midleton V Rare when we went abroad, so managed to pick it up for £60 in the airport, the best tasting whisky we have in the house

That's a bargain - my local off-licence is currently charging €189 a bottle - about £150 if my currency conversion is correct.
