Goodwood Turns To The Dark Side

Night racing will return to the Goodwood Revival this year

Night racing returns to Goodwood
Night racing returns to Goodwood
Goodwood is to play host to racing under the stars during next month’s Revival meeting. The 90-minute endurance race will see a variety of fifties sports racers, such as the Jaguar C-Type, Aston Martin DB3S and Ferrari 750 Monza, battling it out in the autumnal twilight. Special permission has been granted to extend the racing into dusk on Saturday 20th September, for only the second time in the Revival’s history.

The first, in 2002, was to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the inaugural Nine Hour International sports car race and this, fittingly, marks 60 years since racing began at Goodwood. Much like the previous running, it promises to be a great success. Alongside the cars are a stellar line up of drivers including Stirling Moss, Le Mans legend Derek Bell and former F1 racer Jochen Mass.

The event runs from the 19th-21st September and organiser Lord March said: 'I am really excited by the prospect of staging this race again, which will bring the concept of the Nine Hour race back to life in a most dramatic fashion. Ever since 2002, it has been an ambition of mine to see racing of this sort return to Goodwood. The cars will look magnificent, racing against the backdrop of an autumnal West Sussex sunset, maybe with the odd star twinkling above.'

Brilliant news - it's about the only thing that was missing from the Revival. I've just come back from the Le Mans Classic and the sights and sounds of C-Types racing at night is just amazing....

Great news. Hope it will be an annual feature from now on?
Night/evening racing creates a very special atmosphere.
In September I'll be visiting the Spa Six Hours again. Not quite the same, but very nice nevertheless.

Saw the twilight race at the Silverstone Classic and it was very atmospheric. Looking forward to the experience again at Goodwood albeit with slightly older machinery. smile

Does anybody know a fast(ish) way to get to goodwood from Europe? I love going there but the trip by car from Dover takes forever.

Ferry to Portsmouth, just down the road from Goodwood.

Eurotunnel -> M20/25, M23 Gatwick/Brighton, then about 40 mins of mostly scenic A/B road driving (several options).

Chichester district council have seen sense at last. The moning neighbours must have moved or have been placated.

Glad they have decided to do this again. Hopefully though the catering stalls won't close as early as they did last time.

As before its for theFreddie March Memorial Trophy. Named in honour of the 9th Duke of Richmond and Gordon, who founded the circuit, this is a race for sports cars in the spirit of the famous Goodwood Nine Hours races staged between 1952 and 1955. This is usually a 12-lap sprint race, although 2002 saw a special 90-minute endurance race into the dusk to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the first Nine Hours race. Expect to see some epic dices between Alfa Romeo 3000CM, Allard, Aston Martin DB2 and DB3S, Cooper-Jaguar, Ferrari, Frazer Nash, HWM, Jaguar C-type, Lotus, Maserati A6GCS and a host of British specials
