Rear hub assy/drive shaft removal
Discussion
I have done a search for this topic with no joy.
Can someone (TTim,Longbow,Brummie, etc) tell if the removal of the rear hubs is a PITA? I have already removed the wishbones, prior to shot blasting. But the hub carrier (?) has the drive shaft and hand brake cable connected, and looks like if could be a pain to tackle. As i have heard people mention building up the hand brake assembly being a real chore.

Any help appreciated.
Thanks
Cad

Not too bad if you take your time and have a decent set of hex keys. A lot easier than the fronts that can 'weld' themselves in.
Driveshaft comes out very easily once the hub nut is off.
Handbrake is a PITA, but drum brakes always are.
You've got so far, don't chicken out now.
Good luck
Tim

Thanks for that Tim, but the PITA business is getting to me now

I just want her back on the road so I can salvage whats left of the decent weather this year. So I may just leave it as is, and strip the paint off in situ. Think I'll save the hand brake malarky for another time. Still alot to do as it is...
When you were putting your wishbones back on, did you use a suspension aligning bar to help line up the holes? I saw an aligning bar on Steve Heaths website, and wondered if they are worth buying.
Cheers

The Handbrake is pretty easy really, it's replacing the whole cable that is the real PITA.
When I put my wishbones back on i used a centre punch for aligning them, the taper seems to alighn them enough to knock the bolt through, and they went in pretty easily. The hardest bit was holding the Nylon washers in place as you slot the wishbones into the mounting brackets.

Ok. I've had a look the Cerbera manual, and removing the shoes are a doddle. But it says nowt about removing the assembly from the carrier. Is it a matter of just undoing whatever bolts I can see once the shoes are off?
I did try Marine cleaning the carriers today, but they look crap compared with what I've had powder coated already. So I guess I've got no choice but to go ahead.
Thanks for your input chaps so far. What a great forum

Yes, just undo the hex bolts that hold it all together, the backplate and the hub should them come apart, the only bit that may be a swine is the driveshaft nut, but maybe you've already tackled that one.

'Breaking' halfshaft nut
41 mm, halfshaft nut needs removing to take the hub and carrier off without taking the halfshaft out of the diff. N/S is LH thread. I fabricated a brace to stop the hub from turning so I could apply enough torque to remove the nut. The brace is a piece of box steel with 2 holes drilled in it where 2 wheel studs go.
And, when you've finished it'll look like this and you'll be very pleased you did it.

Oh, remember to put everything back together with a nice lot of Locktite.
Good luck
Tim
