2003 Golf GT TDI 150 spec and BADGE question
Discussion
Hi, I have been looking at a 2003 Golf GT TDI 150 - 5 door
What I don't understand is the badges. On the back of this Golf it says GTI but others of the same year and spec say TDI (all red lettering), GT TDI (all chrome lettering) and GT TDI with a red I.
So is this for different levels of spec or just personal choice when you buy the car new?
Is there any way I can find out if it's a real 150? The lettering (TDI) on the engine cover is in red.
Is there any optional equipment I should look out for that was only available on this model? e.g. leather interior
Does anyone know the engine numbers for the different models??
Any information would be a great help, thanks.

the lettering used to mean something but think that has changed, you need to look at the build sticker in the boot, this will have the engine power on it but in kw or what ever the europeans use (not good old fashioned bhp)
If you can check the registration document then it will state the engine code, which should be ARL and 110kW for the 150bhp engine, this is also on the build sticker in the boot. Dont worry about the badges as each dealer would badge them as he saw fit, so there are so many differences.Great cars, i have one myself, a 3 door model
I have the 3 door 150 and it is badged up GTI. They have the same spec as the 1.8T GTI and similar performace. Looking at the cars you cant tell them apart until you start them up.
If buying the 150 then as per the aboove threads check for the boot sticker for 110kw and engine code of ARL. Also look for TDI in red on the engine cover and the 4 motion front valance. The arm rest is not standard on the 150 but is on the 130.
Some of these bits can be added so also check the log book and a HPI will normally confirm 150. Lastly ring VW with the reg and chassis number if your still not sure
When i was car searching last year i saw cars advertised as 130/150 which were clearly not so just be a little careful.

The 150 had a different fron bumper lower lip spoiler also.
So what I mean is that the lower black plastic lip on the front bunper should be deeper and have a slit shaped vent at the left and right, under the bumper grills.
Someone could have added one to the 130 as an aftermarket extra though.
The badges thing - TDi all silver should be low power. TDi with red i should be 130, TDi with red Di should be 150.
However all these things can be faked, so the best solution would be as someone already suggested, have the engine code checked, or have the local VW dealer check the chassis number on their system called dialogue - it will reveal how VW actually built the car

My 150 has GTI on the boot and all of the letters are silver.

the lettering used to mean something then dealers/owners cottoned on and began changing the colours. I think it was to the point where VW didn't bother any more.

Your car does look really good. However I need a 5 door (hate climbing in the back with the child seat). The model I have just put a deposit on is a '53, Black, GT TDI 150. It is £5,00 with 60,500 miles. Here she is http://www.pistonheads.com/sales/632340.htm

Look at the V5 too.
One other thing the Golf GT TDI 115PD was badged up as GT TDI (red I) or TDI red DI.
Nope in the majority of cases - 105/110 Red I - 115/130 red DI - 150 Red TDI or GTIOne other thing the Golf GT TDI 115PD was badged up as GT TDI (red I) or TDI red DI.
If any were badged as 'GT' TDI then that was a dealer fit at delivery. If you look on any of the VW forums (e.g. uk-mkivs.net) you'll see massive threads debating badging. Quite simply because the dealers got involved (the GT TDI was a UK specific model) there's such a variation that normal rules don't apply.

You would think so but i havn't taken a single call in 2 weeks and it's on the traders website. I just fancy an A4 but it looks like i may be keeping the old girl.

Blunder13 I work at a vw dealer in suffolk so if you send me the reg number I can look up the build spec for you car.
E- mail is markellis123@hotmail.co.uk.
I would prefer not to send you my reg number. I am sorry but there are so many cloned cars and dodgy people out there now. I am sorry if you are genuine but you have only been a member of Pistonheads for two months!E- mail is markellis123@hotmail.co.uk.
I am now very happy it's the true article so thanks for all your help.
It is silly badging a car GTI when it is a GT TDI.
Anyway thanks again everyone.
Will get pics up soon (without reg plate)!

Is there not a comon ish issue with the TDI 150 unit as in the camshaft fails or the cam follower?? I recall hearing something. Does it effect chipped cars or std also?
Would be very tempted with one myself they seem to be very cheap these days i.e. from low £4k asking price and the 130GT TDI from low £3k.

Yes this is very true, on ARL engines 110kW engined cars, happened to mine at 68k miles, i got the symptons of a missfire and took it to the dealer to find the camshaft was made of chocolate along with the followers. Fortunately i had a full service history with them, although it was out of warranty, VW decided to pay 75% of the bill (after some very heavey pushing from me). When mine was in being fixed, another turned up with exactly the same problem. Bet to trawl around other VW webs and type " 150 tdi camsahft" into the search facility, there are loads of others who have had the problem. Or check to see if its already had a new cam fitted.
