Guys,Thank you for your replies to my last post....Can anyone tell me what the engine problems were due to on the cerbera....I would have thought large CC engine would have lasted the distance...And,can the engines be re-manufactured by any capable engineering company or do thay require specialist tools please...???..Kev.

My 4.5 is on 55,000 and gets spanked on the road every day and track from time-to-time. Any engine is just a collection of manmade components and can always be repaired.

they're a racing engine mate, not designed the same as other large CC cars, very close tolerances etc and as far as i believe problems could be caused by anything, due to their delicate nature.

No known problems with the 4.5 AJP if maintained correctly!

Shouldnt get any major problems with any engine if you look after it properly really, just get the odd unlucky one

Thank you guys....So the 4.5`s are the choice to go for with reliability in mind.
By the meaning of "looked after",I take it you mean oil changed regular with the propper viscosity and the engine allow to warm up before being asked to work....????

Also by making sure that all the right parts are in exactly the right place, getting engine checked regular, no parts being warn which shouldnt be etc etc, not just oil changes in other words, you have to remember they are racing engines for the road, very very volatile, the V8's were based on F1 engines of the 90's so they're delicate and as such should be treated like a F1 engine, i.e. like a child laugh

I disagree. Good maintenance and proper treatment improve chances only.

Your entitled to disagree based on your experience of owning one Cerb. But it is unfair to compare the reliability of the engine, with mass produced engines like the LSx or a Honda engine. Compare it to something like a Ferrari engine, and it is far superior.
The AJPV8 is essentially a pretty robust, strong and reliable engine compared to other engines from so called super-cars. if you treat it properly, one of the most important things being not to thrash it from cold.
The AJPV8 has a largely undeserved reputation for reliability largely because forums like this are almost exclusively dedicated to owners seeking advice for problems they have with their cars or the engines. Look on any forum on here, even the Jap ones, and you will find stories of supposedly rock solid engines blowing up.

I have owned two cerbs and have (saddo mode) been posting here and pre Pheads for some 9 years. I agree with your comments BUT I dont agree that care and attention guarantees longevity.

The same applies to any engine though doesn't it. smile

Any performance engine yes.
And that is the important comparison. Mistreat a 911 or an M3 and it will go up in smoke.
Mistreat say a vauxhall astra 1.6 and it will still go on forever (I have done this !).

At last another Vauxhall positive comment! smile
Even Clarkson is starting to like them!! smile

But I think this was a quote from Peter about the AJP?
"We have raced it for two years to prove it's reliability"

I am beginning to think a lot of the problems stem from owners who only ever abused their cars on a few days of the year they went out. YOUTUBE is full of what I mean.

These cars were then sold on and subsequent owners suffered the consequences.
I seem to remember a recent statement on PH about all cars should be able to be thrashed from cold!
Or at least he did to all his cars!

I met someone like this in the next tent at Le Mans a few years ago.
He had a NEW M5 and just revved the knackers off it when cold, amongst other idiotic things he did trying to show off!
That car probably owned by its 2nd or 3rd owner by now and over on the BMW thread asking for help?

How many Cerberas out there still owned by original owner?
Just recently someone has been asking about a car sat idle for 4 years without moving!
Can't blame the car for it not liking that either!

Anyway I have convinced myself that there is nothing wrong with my engine and I'm going to drive it as such but with some mechanical sympathy.
I was told it takes 9 miles for the oil to fully reach it's operating temperature and clear off any condensation and I always drive with this in mind.

9 miles? bit exact nerd

I always wait for max water temp, +5 minutes before even experimenting with the loud pedal, and normally a full 15/20 minutes after that till giving it beans.

Remember its not just the engine oil, but Gearbox and Diff oil too.

Bit unfair to be honest. This site is full of 'hard luck' stories, such as people who had engines go because the bolts for the camchain tensioners were not 'nylocked' in, subsequently fell out (due to vibration) and jammed the camchain. You can't blame this sort of thing on the owners, who could have done all the reasonable checks in the world and never spotted this.

I agree with Gazzab, bottom line: the AJP8 is a fairly good basic design but some have been very poorly put together (like the rest of the car).

Having said all of that they are great when they work, they just need much more fettling and care than your average performance car.

Edited for spelling....

I think a lot of the engine failures can be put down to poor workmanship, mine certainly was, no locktight was used on the bolts holding the timing chain guides in place, resulting in a snapped chain when the guide decided to drop into the half time sprocket. Nice.

Alan, before you jump on me I have also owned 2 cerbs, and to be fair neither blew up (well the current one hasn't yet).

How many ferraris have you owned to entitle you to the above opinion? hehe

Me! jump on someone? -good heavens!! smile
Never been rich enough to afford one unfortunately - does that mean I'm not entitled to an opinion based on what I have read and heard? But if I'm wrong I'll be more than happy to be put right.
I've never owned a Skyline either, but I know that they are a pretty amazing car smile
