Amazingly grippy: once your floot is on the pedal it's not moving at all.
Not even remotely waterproof, however...

True, however combined with these sockshttp://www.chainreactioncycles.com/Models.aspx?Mod...
and you're onto a winner. DMR V12s + 5-10s are almost as good as clips with the added safety of being able to jump clear if it all goes pear-shaped

5:10's.
Even if they do look like 'special shoes'.
I have the special 'Sam Hill Fanboi Edition' because they don't have the stupid 1 piece wraparound tongue the normal ones have, and thus fit my feet better. They are nicely covered in mud now to hide all that...
Infinately more grip than any skate shoe offers, plus the sole is a lot stiffer making them more comfortable on the bike.

4th'ed (if that's a term) for the 5.10's. Picked up a pair in Morzine last month and the difference from wearing old Etnies Sk8er shoes is huge. Super stiff sole really cuts down on painful feet and the grip is amazing. That stealth rubber stuff is witchcraft. Not to mention skate shoes soak up water like a sponge, I gave on up mine and bought the 5.10's in the middle of a wet riding day, when I took them off they weighed 1kgs each easily.
Only downsides are on the rare occasion your foot slips a bit you have to make a very exaggerated effort to get your foot off and put it back on. You simply cannot move your foot on the pedal. The massive wrap around tongue is very comfortable for me, but putting it on with a swollen / sore ankle was agonising.
