Had a rubbish day.
went out nice and early to throw the bike on the back of the wagon, got packed, sorted the bike gear, got the bike from its vault went to the wagon and the bike rack has been nicked. It was just a cheapie from Argos but it fitted the 4x4 perfectly, over the spare wheel. It was old and knackered and I cant figure out why someone would want to steal it?
Mother hubbards...

Anyway got the bike to the ride. I love this ride, lots of technical downhill and some good uphill slogs and really hard hills. Gets the work week out of my head.
There is a great hill really rocky and steep, I am determined to get up this hill because my riding companion who is a far better rider than I am, cant do it. I had a great line, he stalled and stepped off the pedals and I went round him. I shifted down a gear only to hear a sickening crunching.

We converted the bike to single speed so I could make it the 3-4 miles back to the car and I cautiously cycled back.

I am insured - I am not sure if this is covered!? If not then my "garmin budget" is blown...

NIGHTMARE.

I know how you feel, I have shred two XT mechs and a X9 mech more recently,

Currently running an XO on one bike at a RRP 180GBP (although I did not pay that for it) if that goes crunch I will not be pleased.

I was not covered by insurance.

If I was you i would get a XT replacement, CRC are doing them for a reasonable price.

Had a bike rack once too, that was nicked too.

You have my sympathy.

Yep - torn in two. Luckily the frame looks undamaged. (Touches wood)

That's a lot of damage were you changing gear at the time? Don't think insurance would cover it though it's just a trail incident!!

Whilst in Morzine one of our group managed to trash a rear hanger and rear mech on a fireroad we have no idea how!!

Poor luck with the mech, thats the thing with carbon fibre, it dosn't bend back into shape!!!!

Talking about insurance has anyone ever had any luck getting stuff replaced on warranty?

I assume mountain bike componants come with the normal duty warranty don't they? Or do you just get fobbed off? I had a chain replaced once because it snapped a few miles after it was fitted but not thought of taking back a mech or something like that.

I feel your pain!

If it helps at all i recently changed from Sram to an 08 XTR shifter and a 08 XT mech and its a really sweet setup. For sure it doesnt have the bling factor but if i do rip it off then i wouldnt cry (much)

simple solution to this,

stick a £20 Deore mech on it, if you like get some stick on carbon fibre from halfords.

drink the rest - or spend it on a garmin.

I'm here all week

I doubt it'll be covered under any sort of insurance - as others have said it's a trail incident, though it might be worth following it up with Shimano / Madison to see if it's a warranty issue. Unless a) something jumped up and hit the mech (rock, branch) or b) you were shifting gear whilst pedaling, it shouldn't just fail like that.

Good luck

I've lost count of the number of X0 rear mechs i've seen with broken pulley mounts. They are so fragile, shame really.
Sympathy though.

The bike is rteasonably new and should still be in warranty(4-5 months) so it rather depends on the point of failure (I suppose) if it was the mech failing and going into spokes then tearing the drop out then it is my problem.

If it is a failure of the drop out causing the mech to fall into the spokes then it is a manufacturing fault.

There is no marks or damage to the spokes so I would sugest it is the latter....

Lol. No chance.

There's a hundred and one reasons why a rear mech or chain snaps, and in 99.99999999% of cases, faulty manufacturing is not one of them.

Bit like tyres. "Oops, I've got a puncture, surely its a new tyre, so it must be a dodgy one"

Never mind the fact you've just driven over a screw.

You have my sympathy - I've killed a brand new XTR before - snapping it in half having only ridden a few hundred metres.

I also ripped off a rear mech hanger and rear mech in god only knows how situations.

All friggin annoying, yet par for the course.

Jut put it down as one of your three in a row mechanicals for the year, and hope you only get a puncture for your next mechanical biggrin

Oh no - the third one happened this morning. On the way to work the rear windscreed exploded. I had a "soothing" glass shower and poopy pants.

Apparently it is a clam off job...
