Sitting on the M3 this morning sitting at a steady 70 in the traffic. BANG! Scared the poo out of me. I look around for the source. No bodywork flapping, no smoke from the rear - hold on, while I am looking rearward in the mirror, my vision is bad, but I cleaned the glass yesterday...

My rear windscreen has shattered!! It has stayed in position, it just looks like crazy paving. The odd thing is the central "impact" point is directly behind the passenger head rest.

I am driving and glancing round to study the glass and all the time thinking how long it will last when bang - swooosh. The glass caved in - all of it forward into the cockpit, down my back across my legs, all over the place. Not one bit fell backwards...

The dynamics of the air around the rear window is for it to push against the screen. Noticed this a couple of times when leaves get trapped there.
Not sure how you get a strike on that window though, it may have been just the weak point that gave way first, rather than an impact.
Hope you've got somewhere safe to park it for the day and it doesnt rain.

I hope your luck with that car changes soon, I'd hate to think what else can go wrong.

Check the windscreen cover in your insurance policy - the screen's probably about a tenner but it's a rear clam-off job to rebond it. About £600 all-in eek

It happens easily enough: A stone flies up over the windscreen and drops down to strike the rear window. As they're typically chucked up by vehicles in front they're travelling in a curve, not a straight line, so can hit the screen behind your head. Have seen lots of Elises where it has happened, on more than one Stelvio run four cars in the group have lost the rear window.

On an S1 it's not such a problem as the screen is so easily replaceable but on the S2 it's an expensive bonding job. The solution is easy enough - get a perspex screen protector like Hangar 111 sell or make your own. Have known several people balk at the cost then wish they hadn't as the glass has shattered.

So does any one know if this is covered by the Insurance I know its normally a £50 excess for new glass on a normal car. But is it standard practice to exclude that from the Elise S2 or have a wopping great big excess???

Result.

But I hope to god that a specialist or main dealer are going to do it and not RAC Autowindscreens or similar....

Just going off past experiences with them

He will probably find enough money under the seats to pay his excess.

On most policies it's covered, but with some it is an exclusion (CCI's track policy was once) and others have a £500 limit.
