How much do you recon it costs to replace a faulty Thermostat on an RS6?

using Audi's standard tally table, approximately 150 times the parts true worth and 30 times the real labour time.

Probably around £600 if you go to the main dealer.

They want 8.5 hours labour + another 1.5 to diagnose the problem in the first place. Obviously there's the 25 pence thermostat to take into account rolleyes

what's the hourly rate they are charging? That must surely take it well past the £600 mark?!?!

Still if it makes you feel any better I changed the one on my Audi at a total cost of £10 (I've been generous and included the cost of petrol to get it and something for my time...)

Let me guess - it's an engine out job.

Previously I've had things like:

exhaust sensor "oh, that'll be an engine out job sir..."
Water pump "oh, that'll be an engine out job sir..."
Electric window switch "oh, that'll be an engine out job sir..."

Well, maybe not that last one, but why can't they build these damn things with accessibility to the bits that are likely to fail!

Audi will usually quote the 'book' time for a job.

Can't remember what we charged for the last 'stat but it was certainly less than 8.5

Most people are along the right lines in as much as it's a 'Front off' job. The most ridiculous thing is they have to remove all the cambelts to change it. (Terrible design if that’s the case) so I’ve decided to bite the bullet and combine it with a cambelt service whist they’re in there.
As far as 600 quid. Well we’re at 1400 already. rolleyes

I've not done one on an RS6, so It might be even more involved, But I did a thermostat on a 2002 S8, and it is as you say front off + cambelt off, I'm pretty sure all the V8's and V6's are like this.

Customer wisely had belt change a year or so early at the same time. We quoted the cam belt time + 1 hour, to do the thermostat, customer only had to pay for the parts for the cambelt as labour already included. I think it was 5.5hrs. And I did it in 5, so we weren't taking the P**S.

8.5 does sound alot, but it could well be the right time, there will be extra coolers in the way and that big air filter assy, to remove before you can get the front off.

Hope they diagnosed it correctly, I'd be putting a water pump on too while I was there, just in case.

Krusty, why don't you use a VAG specialist?

I know a few in the south, are you south east or south west?

Unfortunately the last guy I was ‘recommended’ from RS246.com made such a complete cock up of the cambelt service that I had to have it recovered to QST and it with Kim Collins for weeks and over 3K later before I got it back.
The only reason it’s with Audi Southampton is that Mrs. K and nipper were in it when it overheated and the AA recover it there. I’m still out of the country on business so it was a case of needing the work carried out.
I haven’t been on RS246 for a while but I’ll look up Unit 20, where they are and consider them for future work. I’m based in Winchester and QST are 90 odd miles away. I’m only in the UK for 6 or 7 days a month so the Logistics of getting stuff done are difficult at best. For this instance it's a case of biting the bullet and paying main dealer rip off prices

Hi Krusty
As you are based in Winchester, have you tried Abtech in Totton?

http://www.abtechavssltd.com/

I've taken my a6 (only a 2.4 v6) there for a belt change and service etc and they certainly know their stuff, and came highly recommended to me as well.
They are certainly cheaper than main dealer that is for sure.
Worth a thought for the future.
Cheers
M

Its behind the cam belt. SO you have to move the front end into the "service position" and remove all the covers and take the cambelt off, then there it is.

Can I just say. FIT A WATER PUMP TOO!!!! you have to do the whole job again, cam belt of again if its not the stat.
