Hello,

this is the first time I post in this forum.
I am trying to get a 350i of the first series back to former glory and based in germany.
-So excuse the remains of my schooltime english, please.
As I started thinking wedge shaped not so long ago there is a lot of questions...

Right now I try to make it go in a strait line again, so I want to check the wheels point to the same direction first.
Where can I find information on chassis spec and suspension setting data?
Is it identical to series II cars? Is there some info in Steve Heaths Book on wedges I just ordered?
Or could somebody in the forum help me out, please?
If the setup does not help, what car did the steering of series I wedges come from?

thanks in advance

Henning

Hello and welcome,

and we like questions..........
If I remember well there is no chassis/alignment/steering setup data in the Steve Heath 'Wedge' Bible. Think that series I is different to II and perhaps a search on this forum could provide more info (not sure), if you haven't tried that yet.

On older cars the suspension bushes can be worn and causing 'funny' behaviour of the car. Always worth to check on these and replace if in doubt(I prefer polybushes).
The settings of the rear wheels can upset the road holding of the whole car as well.
Myself: Like you, would find the settings and then have it tested for the current values and start to draw conclusions from there. If the bushes on the suspension haven't been replaced would suspect this and change them first before getting it properly aligned.

Where are you in Germany? Travel quite a bit there for my work and could perhaps pass for a chat/look/help.

Hi Rob,

thanks for the reply. I did a search on this forum -only I do not know if I can use the result.
I found some steering setup data guessing it should refer to a 280i. (search for "toe in")
The problem is I do not know what changes were made to the frames at what time.
My car has the early trainling arm chassis, so it seems to be quite similar to the earlier chassis of the 280.
On the other hand the engine bay and front end should have changed when the ford unit was swapped for the RV8?
So is it more closely related to a series II car then? This is where I am getting confused...

I already did some work replacing the bushes (no poly available) on the back end, and again I do not have an idea about the setup.
Oh, and I just realized the steering rack was not properly fixed. This should make a difference.
Do you have any idea about its origin? As I could make use of some new "rubber-bracket-fixing-things".

Next things on the list will be stopping power, and then -hopefully- power of the enginge.
I wonder if I am going to drive this summer.

I am in Cottbus, between Berlin and Dresden.
That is not exactly close to Belgium, but far-travelled visitors are even more welcome.
