Well I was looking to book up my pre-race testing at Donington for my race in a month or so's time to find that there's virtually no testing available! Several drivers have queried this and our championship co-ordinator has managed to get a look into buying some testing from whoevers nabbed all the track time and it turns out that its a new series called 'Formula Superleague'
I had a look into it and initially it looks very promising - 4.2 litre, 750bhp V12 Elan chassis single seater on slicks, over two 1 hour races with reversed grids.
Then I had a look to see what drivers there were and I couldn't find any. Looking around I thought it was a bit odd that they had football titled news links all over the web site while there were no drivers listed... Then it dawned on me that its actually an A1GP type series modelled on football, and the racing teams are actually football teams
A decent idea made Gimcrack. Whats the point?

Well, superleague have got cars out for a start!I'd like this kind of idea to work to be honest, as marketing between sports could open up some interesting opportunities and bring racing to new markets. The hardest thing will be giving all involved enough of an incentive to maintain their interest.
I'm sorry but I can't see the point of linking race cars with football clubs and don't see any difference between this and PGP or the ill fated Challenge thng touted a few years ago when cars represented towns.
As for Donington, they can't organise test days effectively anyway..............the times we would be racing there on Saturday or Sunday and have to test on the respective Thursday or Friday becuase they had a trackday in between, wasting either a lot of time or a lot of fuel travelling back and forth.
Oh, and to add insult to injury the highest test fees in the country!

Can't see the point here either. Race fans won't want soccer fans at the circuits and only a handful of soccer teams are represented in any case. The Newcastle/Lister sponsorship deal didn't exactly set the world on fire, did it?
A1 offers something different and logical to F1, hence why it's survived 3 years and onto a 4th. This just seems to be a half-arsed idea.

Where's the perceived harm in this series? Personally I don't give a s
t about it one way or another since it doesn't affect me (other than them stealing the garages at Donington that weekend), but surely if it opens up racing to a wider audience, it can only be a good thing? Peel back the blinkers for a minute, and tell me what I'm missing.
And as for Donington not being able to organise test days on a friday, that's a simple restriction on the number of consecutive noisy days.

Well, yes, that and the fact that someone is funding it year on year, that helps too.The entire reason for the Superleague formula or anything else that ties in with another sport, is money.
Have you all seen how much money the top teams pay for a single player? You think race teams don't want a slice of that in some way?

The only one that ever worked was A1 and that's struggling.
The motives of the 'organisers' have to be questioned because the failures damage the perception of the sport and disillusion many potential benefactors and spectators.
And if you're right about the noisy days, that's gonna f
k up the GP then.....................Problem is, a new series starts and it doesn't take away from F1, just the categories immediately below. Then a couple of them will go under, which usually includes the 'exciting new series'
Cars owned by Soccer teams? I can't see it appealing to anyone. You'd need a good 100 teams to cover the English clubs, then times that by all the countries involved. Why would a Manchester Rovers fan support a London United car when he's had a fight with them last week, for example?
A1 works because it's on mostly during of the off-season, uses the nationality angle rather than individuals, promotes a control car as a virtue and visits a lot of countries F1 doesn't. Even then it needs help from its promoters but seeing as it's into its fourth year and second chassis, there's a decent chance that it will become established. I'd rather not ruin this.

but if they really want it to take off, me thinks the organisers will have to sign some big name F1 drivers, probably like some of those that have just or are about to retire.

I just can't see the room for this series, what with GP2, the proposed F2, the Renault World Series and A1GP. I also can't see how linking to football now makes any more sense than when PGP tried it, especially given the current economic situation. A lot of ordinary fans are being priced out of the game, so I can't see them suddenly forking out for FS related tat. Surely if the idea worked we'd have already seen NFLASCAR or somesuch? I'm not saying I WANT it to fail, I just can't see it running beyond a season or two. Say one of the (football) teams has a bad season or two (look at Leeds...), no cup run or whatever, what's the first thing that'll be culled when cash gets a bit tight?
