hehe That's bullst and you know it!

My father in law got back in to slr's after me getting my first 18 months ago. His exact words "you will NEVER (he did shout that) need more than 4 lenses". He used to have film, and a decent selection of glass back in the day (but traded it all in for a Fuji Finepix?). He now has 8 lenses, 4 L's, and still has a few more he would like.

The best thing to do is switch of all connections to the internet, and do not read photography books. It's places like this that make me think "I wan't a lens that will take a shot like that"!!!

I once met an irritating verger who told me, several times, that when he got married, in about 1853, he only had 12 photographs and that was plenty for anybody...

he was right and it would keep the over inflated prices that wedding snappers charge down to a reasonable level too

not too loud, her indoors might hear!

are the canon 28-135mm any good for macro?

i only need it for a website i'm doing for a local jewellery shop, just need close ups of their stuff and it looks like a decent all rounder (so the reviews say)

My dad said to me recently that he wondered why people bothered with wedding photographs when they usually end up in a box where nobody ever looks at them. My parents are about to celebrate their 50th wedding anniversary and they probably had less than twelve, of which I can only recall three!

Many lenses are optimistically called 'macro' by the marketing department when they are not. A true macro lens is a slightly special beast and achieves 1:1 magnification or better. In other words, an object Xmm long will make an image Xmm long on the sensor.

However they're not cheap, so if you want a quick fix (and also retain AF, metering and any other lens/camera chatter) a close-up lens that screws onto the front of your existing lens is a good option for little money.

no, but am called after them, one of my favourite bands cloud9

Look forward to listening to the rest of your stuff!

I agree with Simpo, the kit lens with a +2 or +4 filter would do the trick nicely for what you need.
